After spending the week thinking about AI search, I keep coming back to one conclusion:

The internet is getting better at recognizing authenticity.

Not perfect.

But better.

The websites, videos, reviews, posts, and discussions that tend to get shared most are usually the ones that feel useful and genuine.

That's good news for small businesses.

You don't need a giant advertising budget.

You don't need a viral video.

You don't need to sound like a Fortune 500 company.

You just need to consistently show people who you are and how you help.

The internet may be changing.

But trust still matters.

And trust has always been good marketing.

Have a great weekend, everyone.

One thing I've learned about Reddit:

It is not Facebook.

Businesses often struggle there because Reddit users are extremely protective of their communities.

In many groups:

• self-promotion is discouraged
• advertisements are disliked
• marketing language gets spotted immediately

In fact, some communities actively remove promotional content.

Ironically, that may be one reason AI systems trust Reddit discussions.

Most people there are not trying to sell anything.

They're simply sharing experiences, opinions, recommendations, and complaints.

For marketers, the lesson isn't "go advertise on Reddit."

The lesson is:

People trust authentic conversations more than marketing messages.

That's a useful reminder no matter what platform you're using.

For years, businesses have focused on one goal:

Get found on Google.

That still matters.

But AI is changing how people search.

When someone asks ChatGPT, Gemini, or Google's AI for recommendations, the answers often come from much more than websites and Google reviews.

They come from:
• Reddit discussions
• YouTube videos
• blogs
• forums
• social media
• real conversations

The internet is becoming less about what you say about your business and more about what the internet says about your business.

That's why visibility across multiple platforms matters more than ever.

The question may no longer be:

"Do you rank on Google?"

It may be:

"Does the internet know who you are?"

As I head into the weekend, here's a challenge:

Think about your business.

What is one story from this week that only you could tell?

Maybe:
• a customer problem you solved
• a lesson you learned
• something funny that happened
• a challenge you overcame

That's often where great content begins.

The internet doesn't need another generic sales pitch.

It needs more real people sharing real experiences.

Have a great weekend everyone.

And if your business feels "boring"...

You probably just haven't found the story yet.

Here's a marketing lesson that took me years to fully appreciate:

People rarely buy what you do.

They buy what your service does for them.

Nobody wakes up excited about:
• accounting
• payroll
• packing supplies
• SEO reports

What they care about is:

• saving money
• avoiding problems
• growing their business
• getting home earlier
• sleeping better at night

The most successful marketing often focuses less on the service itself and more on the outcome.

Sometimes changing that perspective changes everything.

One thing I've learned after years of helping small businesses with social media:

Some industries make content easy.

Ferrets?
No problem.

Cute photos.
Funny videos.
Endless mischief.

An accounting firm?

That's a little harder.

Or is it?

The truth is that most businesses aren't boring.

We're just often too close to them to see the stories.

Behind every business are:
• customers
• challenges
• successes
• mistakes
• lessons learned

And that's usually where the best content comes from.

Sometimes the hardest part of marketing isn't creating content.

It's recognizing that your business already has stories worth telling.

After spending time reviewing social media analytics this week, I came away with one big thought:

Small businesses probably put too much pressure on themselves to be everywhere online.

The internet changes constantly.
Algorithms change.
Platforms rise and cool off.
Trends come and go.

And honestly?
That’s normal now.

Instead of trying to master every platform, it may make more sense to focus on:
• consistency
• authenticity
• useful content
• staying visible over time

Sometimes the goal isn’t to “go viral.”

Sometimes the goal is simply to be remembered when someone finally needs your service.

Hope everyone has a great weekend.

One thing I’ve noticed about social media:

The platforms that generate the most noise are not always the ones producing the best long-term results.

TikTok may generate fast attention.
But YouTube videos can continue being discovered months later.
Pinterest content can quietly live for years.
Google Business Profile may still be one of the most important tools for local businesses because customers are already searching there.

That’s why marketing can feel confusing.

There is no single “perfect” platform anymore.

The real challenge is figuring out which platforms match your business, your audience, and your personality.

Social media is getting harder to figure out.

A few years ago everyone said pages were dying.
Then TikTok became the “must have” platform.
Now I’m seeing some of my YouTube content quietly outperform TikTok.

At the same time, I found myself wondering:
Is Pinterest still relevant?

The answer may actually be yes.

The bigger lesson?
Different platforms serve different purposes.

Some are designed for fast attention.
Others quietly help customers discover you over time.

For small businesses, success often comes less from chasing trends…
and more from understanding where your audience already spends time.

As we head into Memorial Day weekend, here’s a reminder for small business owners:

People usually don’t hire local businesses because the graphics were perfect.

They hire businesses that feel familiar, trustworthy, and human.

That’s why relatable content often works better than overly polished corporate marketing.

People connect with:
• real stories
• real personalities
• real business owners

You don’t have to dominate the internet.

You just need to stay visible enough that when someone eventually needs your service, your business is the one they remember.

Wishing everyone a safe and relaxing Memorial Day weekend.
