Alain Locke was born on September 13, 1885. A philosopher, educator, and patron of the arts, he is known as the “Father of the Harlem Renaissance.”

Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Locke graduated from Harvard University in 1907 and became the first African American to be awarded a Rhodes Scholarship. He later earned a Ph.D. in philosophy and went on to teach at Howard University, where he became a prominent figure in the intellectual life of Black America.

Locke is best remembered for his 1925 anthology, The New Negro, which celebrated Black art, literature, and culture, and laid the groundwork for the Harlem Renaissance. His advocacy for African American artists and writers helped to bring their work to a broader audience and to redefine Black identity in the early 20th century. Locke's influence extended beyond literature; he was also a key figure in promoting African American contributions to music and the visual arts.

In recognition of his contributions to American culture, Locke was awarded the Spingarn Medal in 1925. Alain Locke passed away on June 9, 1954.
