📖 I came across an interesting article in Paper Matters magazine by Domtar.

This article looks at Generation Alpha (born 2010–2024) and why paper continues to matter, even for the first generation to grow up completely surrounded by digital devices.

A few things that stood out to me:

Research continues to show that students generally retain and comprehend information better when reading from paper than from screens. Printed materials encourage focused, sustained reading without the constant distractions that come with digital devices.

🤝 Physical experiences still matter

Even though Gen Alpha has grown up with technology, they still value tangible, hands-on experiences. The article cites research showing that 54% of U.S. consumers believe children learn better with printed materials than with digital devices.

✔️ Paper feels authentic

In a world of AI-generated content, deepfakes, and digital manipulation, printed materials are often viewed as more permanent, trustworthy, and real.

📊 Generation Alpha is influencing purchasing decisions

According to the article, 95% of Gen Alpha parents learn about new products from their children. Children's opinions influence 49% of family purchasing decisions, making this generation more influential than many people realize.

As someone who works in the printing industry, I found it encouraging that even the first truly digital generation still sees value in print.

🇺🇸 Printing Helped Shape America

Long before social media, television, or even photography, the printing press was how ideas spread across the American colonies.

During the years leading up to the American Revolution, printers created newspapers, pamphlets, posters, and engraved illustrations that informed, persuaded, and connected people across the colonies. Images like Benjamin Franklin's famous "Join, or Die" cartoon and Paul Revere's engraving of the Boston Massacre became some of the most recognizable pieces of communication in early American history.

It's fascinating to think that the same basic process of putting ink on paper has been helping people share ideas, tell stories, and promote causes for hundreds of years.

The technology has certainly changed, but the purpose hasn't. Great printing still helps businesses, organizations, and communities communicate their message every day.
