This is 3-year-old Abygaile Bennett, whose life was tragically taken after suffering horrific abuse at the hands of her father, Justin Bennett.
In disturbing footage connected to the case, Bennett was seen forcing a hot pepper into the little girl’s mouth as punishment.
Authorities said Abygaile endured repeated physical abuse. She suffered devastating injuries, including broken ribs and a broken back, and the fatal beating caused her heart to rupture.
Bennett admitted to repeatedly beating his daughter and causing her death. Prosecutors ultimately agreed to recommend a sentence of 50 years to life in prison rather than pursue the death penalty.
The case also raised serious questions about the child-protection system. Family members had reportedly warned authorities that Abygaile and her sisters could be in danger, but the case was referred to an outside agency before being closed.
Abygaile’s mother, Korie Morimoto, was also charged in connection with failing to protect the children. She said she had been documenting Bennett’s abusive behavior while trying to regain custody of her daughters.
