Print shop trivia: both "cliché" and "stereotype" started life in print shops. A stereotype was a solid metal plate cast to reprint the same page over and over, and cliché was the French printers' word for that same plate, supposedly named for the sound it made when cast.

A phrase that got printed to death became a cliché. An image repeated without thinking became a stereotype. Every time you use either word, you're speaking printer.

Ducks in the creek this Saturday. The Kiwanis Club of Lapeer's 8th Annual Rubber Duck Dash runs from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Cramton Park, with the race itself kicking off at 2:30 p.m. when the ducks go into Farmers Creek, assisted by the Lapeer County Young Marines.

It's free to attend, so bring the kids and come hang out even if you don't have a duck in the water.

We're proud to be a sponsor again this year. Proceeds go right back into Lapeer County, which makes this one of our favorite Saturdays on the calendar. Hope to see you down there.

Here's one we loved: as part of the country's 250th birthday celebration, a time capsule was buried this year in Philadelphia. By law, it can't be opened until July 4, 2276. And by federal mandate, it has to include books, manuscripts, and printed matter representing this moment in time. Think about that for a second. Someone had to decide what printed materials were worth preserving for 250 years. That's not a small task, and it's honestly the kind of pressure we respect. Whatever you're printing, whether it's a wedding invitation or a company history, it matters more than you might think. Someone's going to hold onto it.

Here's something we didn't know until this week: snails don't just make one kind of slime. Researchers found they actually produce five different types, each one built for a different job. One helps them glide, one seals them in for the winter, two are for defense, and so on. Scientists think it could even inspire new kinds of adhesive materials down the road. We got a kick out of that, honestly. Picking the right adhesive, coating, or finish for the right job is a bigger part of what we do than people realize. Turns out snails figured that out first.

A group of mathematicians just solved a physics puzzle that had stumped people for decades, the question of which way a lawn sprinkler spins when it's running in reverse, sucking water in instead of spraying it out. Print shop trivia: ever wonder why they're called uppercase and lowercase letters? In the days of hand-set type, capital letters were stored in the upper case on the printer's rack, and small letters in the lower case. The words literally describe furniture.

Five hundred years later, the cases are gone but the names stuck. You've been talking about type storage your whole life.

There's an organ in Germany playing a single piece of music that started nearly 25 years ago and won't finish until the year 2640. It just had a chord change this month, its first in years. We admire the commitment. We really do. But we also want to go on record: your print job will be ready well before then. Long-term projects are great in theory, but when it comes to postcards, business cards, or that banner you need for Saturday, we're going to go with fast.
