For local farmers, this water is essential for growing the crops that help drive our region's economy. But it's not just farmers celebrating.
The return of flowing water means residents can once again enjoy one of southern New Mexico's most unique seasonal traditions. Expect to see more people along the riverbanks, photographers capturing the scenery, families enjoying nature, anglers trying their luck, and preparations beginning for popular activities such as rafting and the annual Raft the Rio event.
Many longtime residents look forward to seeing the Rio Grande come alive each year. The flowing water attracts birds and wildlife, creates beautiful views throughout the Mesilla Valley, and serves as a reminder of just how important the river is to our community.

In a time when the film industry in Southern New Mexico has faced uncertainty and political controversy, one company has quietly emerged as a serious player in the future of media production. Las Cruces Studios is gaining attention from production and marketing companies around the country for its cutting-edge integration of artificial intelligence into film, television, and commercial production.
Sources close to the studio say the company has spent the last two years developing advanced AI-driven production workflows behind the scenes โ€” technology capable of dramatically reducing production costs while increasing creative output. Industry insiders now claim production companies from multiple states have begun taking notice of what is being built inside the Las Cruces facility.
According to studio sources, Las Cruces Studios has quietly been producing AI-enhanced commercial segments, television content, and film production material for outside companies while simultaneously expanding its own technological capabilities. The facility has reportedly become a hub for experimental production techniques that blend traditional filmmaking with rapidly evolving artificial intelligence systems.
One company already utilizing the studioโ€™s capabilities is Winning Choice Marketing, a marketing firm now using Las Cruces Studios to develop marketing campaigns and creative content for a growing list of clients. Sources familiar with the operation say the partnership demonstrates how smaller regional studios are beginning to compete with larger media markets by leveraging AI technology and virtual production systems.
The rise of Las Cruces Studios comes during a turbulent period for the cityโ€™s film infrastructure ambitions. In 2024, Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham announced an agreement involving 828 Productions, stating the company planned to bring approximately $75 million in capital investment into Las Cruces for film infrastructure development ahead of the November election.
However, after nearly two years, city officials reportedly concluded that the promised level of development and investment had not materialized as expected. The situation created growing frustration among some city leaders and members of the public who had hoped the project would rapidly transform Las Cruces into a larger production destination.
Meanwhile, Las Cruces Studios appears to have continued operating and expanding largely outside the spotlight.
The studio has served as the primary production facility for The Las Cruces Channel since 2009 and remained fully operational during the COVID-19 lockdowns, when many productions across the country shut down. During that period, the studio reportedly expanded its live broadcasting operations across platforms including Facebook, YouTube, and X, formerly known as Twitter.
A source connected to the studio stated that while much of the public attention remained focused on large outside investment announcements, Las Cruces Studios was โ€œquietly building the future of production from the inside out.โ€
Industry observers now say the companyโ€™s AI development strategy could position Las Cruces as an unexpected emerging center for next-generation media production in the Southwest โ€” particularly as studios nationwide search for faster, more cost-effective methods of producing commercials, television content, and digital media.
While officials continue debating the future of large-scale film infrastructure projects in the city, Las Cruces Studios appears to be proving that innovation may already be taking place behind closed doors.

LAS CRUCES NEWS โ€” City Ends Deal With 828 Productions, Demands Repayment

The Las Cruces City Council voted in February to terminate its three-year partnership with film studio 828 Productions after officials said the company failed to deliver promised film industry development projects in the city.
The agreement, originally approved in 2023, provided nearly $3.7 million in city funding for studio expansion and infrastructure improvements. The city is now demanding repayment of nearly $1.3 million already spent.
City leaders said 828 Productions and CEO Todd Lundbohm failed to meet major commitments, including a proposed $75 million investment and construction of a 300,000-square-foot production studio along with multiple film facilities across Las Cruces.
According to city officials:

Only 9 permanent local jobs were created instead of the promised 100.

Just $3.5 million of the pledged $75 million investment was completed.

Much of the companyโ€™s reported film spending occurred outside Las Cruces, primarily in Albuquerque and Santa Fe.

Economic Development Director Elizabeth Teeters stated only $22 million of 828โ€™s reported $110 million production spending directly benefited Las Cruces.
Officials also noted that most properties tied to the project remain underdeveloped or deteriorating, with meaningful work occurring mainly at the companyโ€™s headquarters on South Miranda Street.

The project was originally announced in August 2022 by Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham, just months before the 2022 election cycle intensified. At the time, the governor promoted the California-based companyโ€™s plan to invest $75 million over six years to build a 300,000-square-foot film studio in Las Cruces, supported by a $3 million state LEDA investment and promises of at least 100 high-paying jobs.

With the project now collapsing far short of those promises, some residents and political observers are questioning whether the highly publicized announcement was promoted prematurely for political and economic optimism before the full viability of the project had been proven.

When asked whether the clawback actions could hurt Las Crucesโ€™ long-term reputation in the film industry, Councilor John Munoz pointed to other successful film-related operations already active in the city.

The Las Cruces Studios media and AI facility, operating since 2005, has supported more than 3,000 productions and continues to provide accessible production resources for filmmakers and producers throughout Southern New Mexico.

Meanwhile, New Mexico State University recently began construction on its own $15 million movie studio project at Arrowhead Center.
