A baby hippo found an unlikely best friend after losing its mother in a tsunami.

Natural disasters affect animals just as deeply as they affect humans. In one remarkable story, a young hippo calf was separated from its mother during a devastating tsunami.

Rescuers brought the orphaned calf to a sanctuary, where something unexpected happened. The hippo formed a strong bond with an elderly giant tortoise believed to be over 100 years old.

The unusual friendship became famous worldwide. It showed how animals can form emotional connections even across completely different species.

Some city birds have found an unexpected use for discarded cigarette butts.

Researchers in Mexico City discovered that house finches and house sparrows pull fibers from smoked filters and weave them into their nests. Nests containing more of these fibers generally had fewer parasites, likely because ni****ne and other chemical residues can repel certain nest-dwelling arthropods.

Experiments also found that house finches added more cigarette fibers when faced with a greater parasite threat. This suggests the material may serve as a form of nest defense, although scientists cannot say that the birds fully understand how the chemicals work.

There is a serious downside. The same residues that discourage parasites can damage cells in adult birds and chicks. What appears to be an ingenious urban adaptation may therefore provide a short-term benefit at a hidden biological cost.

Nature found a use for our waste—but that does not make the waste safe. Cigarette butts are still toxic, persistent litter that should never be left where wildlife can reach them.
