Happy 75th birthday to Anjelica Huston (born July 8, 1951). She is an American actress, director and model, known for often portraying eccentric and distinctive characters, she has received multiple accolades, including an Academy Award and a Golden Globe Award, as well as nominations for three British Academy Film Awards and six Primetime Emmy Awards. In 2010, she was awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

The daughter of director John Huston and granddaughter of actor Walter Huston, she reluctantly made her big screen debut in her father's A Walk with Love and Death (1969). Huston moved from London to New York City, where she worked as a model throughout the 1970s. She decided to pursue acting in the early 1980s and had her breakthrough with her performance as a mobster moll in Prizzi's Honor (1985), also directed by her father, for which she became the third generation of her family to receive an Oscar, when she won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress, joining both John and Walter Huston in this recognition.

Huston achieved further critical and popular recognition for playing a mistress in Crimes and Misdemeanors (1989), a long-vanished wife in Enemies, A Love Story (1989), a con artist in The Grifters (1990), the Grand High Witch in The Witches (1990), Morticia Addams in the Addams Family films (1991–1993), and an adventurous writer in Manhattan Murder Mystery (1993). She collaborated with director Wes Anderson in The Royal Tenenbaums (2001), The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou (2004), and The Darjeeling Limited (2007); and lent her voice to several animated films, mainly the Tinker Bell series (2008–2015). Her other notable film credits include The Crossing Guard (1995), Ever After (1998), Daddy Day Care (2003), Choke (2008), 50/50 (2011) and John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum (2019).

On television, Huston has also acted in Family Pictures (1993), Buffalo Girls (1995), The Mists of Avalon (2001), Huff (2006), Medium (2008–2009), Transparent (2015–2016), and Towards Zero (2025). She won a Golden Globe for playing Carrie Chapman Catt in the cable film Iron Jawed Angels (2004), and a Gracie Award for her portrayal of Eileen Rand in Smash (2012–2013). Huston directed the films Bastard Out of Carolina (1996) and Agnes Browne (1999) and wrote the memoirs A Story Lately Told (2013) and Watch Me (2014).

Happy 69th birthday to Kelly Ann McGillis (born July 9, 1957). She is an American actress known for her film roles such as Rachel Lapp in Witness (1985), for which she received Golden Globe and BAFTA nominations; Charlotte 'Charlie' Blackwood in Top Gun (1986); Made in Heaven (1987); The House on Carroll Street (1988); and as Kathryn Murphy in The Accused (1988). In her later career, she has starred in horror films such as Stake Land (2010), The Innkeepers (2011), and We Are What We Are (2013).

After making her film debut in Reuben, Reuben in 1983, McGillis's breakout role was that of an Amish mother in Witness (1985), for which she received Golden Globe and BAFTA award nominations. Her next high-profile role was that of flight instructor Charlotte Blackwood (call sign "Charlie") in the 1986 fighter-pilot film Top Gun, starring alongside Tom Cruise. In 1987, McGillis acted in the romance film Made in Heaven alongside Timothy Hutton, which was produced by Lorimar Productions.

McGillis played the part of caretaker for Miss Venable (Jessica Tandy) in 1988's The House on Carroll Street, which also starred Jeff Daniels. At the same year, she also appeared in The Accused, where she played the role of Kathryn Murphy opposite Jodie Foster. After The Accused, she appeared in Cat Chaser with Peter Weller, a film which she despised and discouraged her from pursuing an acting career.

McGillis began working in television again in 2006, then in 2007 joined the cast of Showtime's The L Word for its fifth season

1982, while studying at Juilliard, McGillis was r***d at knifepoint in her Manhattan apartment by two young men, one of whom was a teenager named Leroy Johnson. The attackers threatened to kill her before fleeing when police arrived. McGillis later described the trauma in a 1988 People magazine interview, saying it left her with severe nightmares, self-blame, and substance issues; she cited the experience as a reason for declining the victim role and instead playing the prosecutor in The Accused.

McGillis was left scratched and bruised after she was assaulted by a woman who broke into her home on June 17, 2016. She said the attack, as well as others which she has been a victim of in the past, led her to apply for a concealed carry permit to protect herself.

On this day : Class premiered . July 6, 1983 American comedy drama film directed by Lewis John Carlino, starring Rob Lowe, Jacqueline Bisset, Andrew McCarthy, and Cliff Robertson. In addition to being Lowe's second film (released four months after The Outsiders), it marked the film debuts of McCarthy, John Cusack, Virginia Madsen, Casey Siemaszko, and Lo**ta Davidovich.

Bisset replaced Lesley Ann Warren for the role of Ellen Burroughs. Bisset was disappointed that scenes involving her character's backstory were cut. These included a scene at the end where her son visited her in a mental hospital. "When you're in a comedy ... It's always difficult to develop a character because they always cut for comedy, the comic effect. I lost a couple of scenes that would have explained my character better. She was more interesting in the original script. Why does she do what she does? She's a very unhappy woman. She doesn't have any relationship at home. Cliff tells her in the bedroom that she's a Burroughs and as long as she's a Burroughs she must behave. That's not much of a relationship to have with your husband. So she's a bit off balance, greatly in need of a childlike component in her life. She's been completely buckled down by Cliff. There's absolutely no fantasy aspect to her life. She's condemned to being an adult... The director sees it much more as a rites-of-passage film", Bisset said.

McCarthy attended an open call held at New York University and wound up with the lead part in the film.

Lowe said, "It was a very atypical role for me. So it's a little uncomfortable when I'm too readily associated with it. 'Oh yeah, him, he was in Class.' It was such an extroverted role, and most of my work has been just the opposite. I like the movie. I think it was fun, not the vile concoction a lot of people seem to think it was."

Madsen dislikes talking about her experience making the film, stating in a 2013 interview, "Those guys were as****es. They were really sh*tty to me. It was bad. Bad memories." Rob Lowe said her comment was justifiable, pointing out "her big part in that movie required her shirt to get ripped off, and looking back, it couldn't be a more egregious, vintage, lowbrow, 1980s Porky's-esque, shoehorned-in moment... I can imagine it was not much fun to do that big sequence with a bunch of laughing, ogling frat-boy actors. I mean, can you imagine putting up with me, [John] Cusack, Alan Ruck, and Andrew McCarthy at 18?"

The Civil War was not fought over one question alone. It was fought over the future of a nation and the future of millions of people held in bo***ge.

Abraham Lincoln’s first priority was preserving the Union. Frederick Douglass never let America forget that a Union built on the suffering of Black people was not enough. He pushed Lincoln and the nation to understand that saving the country without destroying slavery would leave the deepest injustice untouched.

Douglass understood something that still echoes today. A nation is not measured by the borders it protects. It is measured by the people it is willing to protect.

History remembers Lincoln for helping preserve the Union and issuing the Emancipation Proclamation. It remembers Douglass because he refused to let the promise of freedom stop halfway. He demanded that liberty belong to Black Americans not just as an ideal but as a lived reality.

The greatest movements are often shaped by leaders inside the system and voices outside the system pushing them to become better. Without pressure power rarely changes. Without courage justice rarely moves.
