Have you ever felt like you’re on a certain path, but then had to take an unexpected detour?
Kurt Warner once said, “The road toward dreams has many detours.”
Imagine your 12-year-old self, navigating changes, meeting new friends, and finding your place. For me, this change built a desire for connection. I was never great at sports, so I searched for my purpose. One day, I signed up for ART as an elective, and it changed everything. It led me on a path to my dreams.
My art teacher, Bob Beason, was drawing logos for local businesses, then scanning them into the computer and using Photoshop. This was a turning point for me when I realized you could make money doing what you love. At 15, I knew I wanted to study graphic design. I transferred to the only high school in my area with a graphic design program.
I loved creating digital artwork and even became a student aide to help teach the course my senior year. I applied to the Art Institute of Portland and was accepted with two scholarships: one for artistic merit and another regional scholarship.
Attending the Art Institute was an amazing experience, but I could only attend for a year due to financial reasons. This detour didn’t stop me. I started my own graphic design company, which was successful. One of my first clients was the former editor of the San Francisco Chronicles. I also worked with a client recognized by Time Magazine and Wall Street Journal. Despite opportunities to work for large corporations, I loved the tangible impact I had on growing businesses.
I chose to work with small businesses because I knew I could make a real impact. Sometimes, the biggest impact comes from taking an unexpected detour. Our businesses go through detours as well, and having someone with determination and resilience by your side to help you strategize can make all the difference.
