NEW REPORT: The American Shopper Has Changed. Unfortunately, Much of Our Industry Hasn’t ... What We Are Doing Wrong & How To Fix It.

According to the 2026 State of the American Shopper study,

- Consumers are stressed,
- Cautious, price-aware,
- Digitally fluid,

And increasingly willing to abandon brands, the second somebody else offers a better experience.

And what is much of the furniture and mattress industry doing in response?

Running another:

“SAVE UP TO 70% OFF PRESIDENT’S MEMORIAL TAX REFUND LIQUIDATION SUPER BLOWOUT.

”Brilliant...

Nothing says:“

We understand modern consumer psychology,”…

- Like inflatable gorillas,
- Fake urgency,
- And financing banners that look like a hostage negotiation. (Which they can be trapping consumers with 30%+ interest rates.)

The study literally says consumers are:

- anxious about spending
- focused on savings
- worried about the future• trying new brands
- demanding convenience
- expecting omnichannel experiences
- influenced by social content
- shopping BOTH online and in-store
- willing to leave brands instantly for better value or experience

And our industry’s response?

“FREE BEDFRAME WITH PURCHASE!!!

”The arrogance of ignorance is undefeated.

Consumers Aren’t Looking For “Cheap.”

They’re Looking For CONFIDENCE.

Consumers don’t wake up saying:

“Honey… I hope we find a sectional with 17 fake markdown stickers today.”

The Mattress Industry’s Favorite Hobby:

Explaining Why It’s Not Their Fault … When It Is And I’ll Prove It

I just read the latest article in Furniture Today about mattress executives discussing “industry challenges,” consolidation, premium products, online disruption, and all the usual corporate therapy-session talking points.

And honestly?

• This category deserves its problems.
• Not because consumers stopped caring about sleep.
• Not because people suddenly decided mattresses aren’t important.

But because the industry spent YEARS hiding behind

• bloated pricing,
• fake differentiation,
• endless “50% OFF” events,
• and a distribution system built like it was still 1998.

Now the walls are cracking… and suddenly everyone wants sympathy.

We Can’t Do EDLP in Furniture… Because Then What Would We Put on the Windows?

Furniture retail has a very serious concern with EDLP.

Not margins.
Not profitability.
Not customer trust.
Window real estate.

If you stop screaming 50% OFF!!!, 72 HOURS ONLY!!!, LAST CHANCE!!! (again). What exactly goes in the glass?

A plant?
A sofa… just sitting there… with an honest price on it?

HMMMMMMMMM

I've been RANTING a lot about our industry, the 50% off everything, and No, No, No Payments for 12, 48, or 60 months..

“Don’t Blame Your RSAs” — Or Keep Enjoying 60% Turnover Like It’s a Feature.

“If this image offends you, your turnover problem just introduced itself.

I recently had a conversation with a guy we’ll call Bob from New Jersey.

Bob has been a furniture sales rep for 40 years. That’s not a typo. Four. Decades.

Bob called me out after my “Don’t Blame Your RSAs post… and said something most executives conveniently ignore:

“Everyone keeps blaming salespeople. No one talks about how badly furniture RSAs are treated — or why turnover is completely out of control.”

So I dug into the turnover data—and then I remembered something that hit even harder.

The Home Furnishings Industry Isn’t “Challenged” ... It’s Bleeding Out From Marketing Malpractice.

Let’s stop lying to ourselves.

The home furnishings industry didn’t get here because of:

· The economy
· Amazon
· Wayfair
· Interest rates
· Tariffs or “the modern consumer.”

It got here because marketing leadership failed — quietly, comfortably, and without accountability.

The Furniture Manufacturer & Furniture Retail Pricing Disaster (And How to Fix It Without Killing Your Retail Store)

Let’s drop the polite fiction.

Manufacturers didn’t lose control of furniture pricing because of Amazon.

They lost it because they abandoned brand discipline in exchange for scale, mistook distribution for strategy, and replaced long-term value with short-term volume dopamine.

Amazon didn’t break furniture pricing.

Manufacturers handed it the crowbar and held the door open.

Oh, Darling, Your Furniture Store RSAs Aren't the Villains—Your Furniture Marketing Is a Flaming Hot Mess Wrapped in a Clown Car Explosion.

Every time I doom-scroll through LinkedIn, I'm ambushed by a horde of self-anointed "geniuses" yapping about how to turbocharge your RSA closing rates.

Because nothing says "productive morning scroll" like LinkedIn's finest hot takes serving as rant bait on a silver platter. Strap in for my latest tirade on the glorious implosion of home furnishings sales—and the villains I hold responsible.

It's like a never-ending carnival of charlatans peddling snake oil for squeezing sales out of thin air. They drone on about "alpha posture," "ironclad handshakes," and scripts so magical they could probably summon unicorns.

But here's the bitter, razor-sharp truth pill that's got more spikes than a porcupine on steroids: It's all utterly pointless.
You could resurrect Jordan Belfort, multiply him like a nasty virus, and plop his smarmy clones all over your showroom—but if your store's traffic is deader than disco, your closing rate is a big, fat, mathematically flawless ZERO.

Congrats, you've invented the art of closing nothing!
Quit scapegoating your poor RSAs for your showroom resembling a ghost town from a zombie apocalypse flick.

They're not flopping; you're flopping them. You've marooned them in a sales Sahara with nothing but a price tagger and a whispered "good luck," then act shocked when the cash register's playing cricket symphonies.

Bold move, Einstein.

The Furniture Manufacturer's Million-Dollar Comedy Sketch
Ah, the giant pink elephant tap-dancing in the corner that everyone's pretending is invisible: The Great Manufacturer Ghosting Act.

These overlords hurl millions at furniture markets, erecting showrooms in High Point and Vegas that make Versailles look like a budget IKEA hack. They schmooze buyers with fine wine, dazzle with mood lighting, and toast new launches like they're curing world hunger.
And then? Crickets.

They dump the product on your floor like an unwanted puppy—zero backstory, zero flair, zero lifeline.

They blow a fortune teleporting it to your store, then skimp like misers on actually helping you get it out the door. It's the business equivalent of buying a Ferrari and forgetting to add gas, tires, or a steering wheel.

Genius-level incompetence.
