When you value yourself—and value work-life balance—Friday afternoons can look like this: painting whales by the pool. 🎨🐋☀️

Success isn’t just about how much you accomplish. It’s also about creating a life with room to breathe, play, and rediscover the things that bring you joy.

Today, I’m choosing creativity, sunshine, and a little watercolor therapy—and I don’t feel guilty about it! 💙

Rise & Thrive, challenged us to think differently about the F-word: FAILURE.

What story are you telling yourself about your failure? What will your next chapter be? And instead of focusing on what you have to do, ask yourself:

What do I get to do today?

I could tell myself that leaving my last position meant I failed—or I can recognize that it gave me the opportunity to begin a new chapter.

Today, I get to use more than 25 years of marketing experience to help small-business owners grow. I get to build Starfish Communications, make meaningful connections and create something that truly reflects who I am.

Failure isn’t the end of the story. Sometimes, it’s the first sentence of an exciting new chapter. ⭐️

Thank you, Kelly, for the reminder!

Whatever today brings, rise above it, believe in yourself, and thrive! ⭐️🌊

The five biggest mistakes new small businesses make with their marketing and advertising :

🦩Trying to market to “everyone” instead of a specific customer.
🦩Vague positioning —you can’t clearly explain who you serve and why you’re different.
🦩Messages that don’t match how your ideal customer thinks, searches, or buys
Lead lists/audiences built around convenience rather than customer intent

🦩Not defining success metrics up front
Optimizing for vanity metrics—likes, impressions, clickbait traffic—instead of revenue outcomes.

🦩No baseline or targets—so it’s unclear what “working” looks like.

🦩Attribution gaps—you can’t tell which channels actually drive sales.

🦩Spending before validating (or testing) what works.

🦩Launching campaigns without enough customer/market evidence.

🦩Copy/creative changes too late (or too randomly) instead of running focused experiments.

🦩Scaling budget based on early signals that aren’t statistically meaningful.

🦩Writing/creating content that doesn’t answer customer intent.

🦩Overemphasis on product features instead of problems, outcomes, and proof.

🦩 Weak landing pages that don’t convert visitors into leads/customers.

🦩 No clear offer (trial, demo, discount, consultation, content upgrade) tied to a specific audience.

🦩Ignoring fundamentals of distribution and customer experience.

🦩No repeatable distribution plan—relying on one channel or one burst of activity.

🦩Slow or broken conversion paths—form issues, unclear pricing, no follow-up.

🦩 Underestimating retention and referrals marketing “new” without building lifetime value.

Small businesses don’t always need a full-time marketing department.

But they do need someone who knows what to do, what not to do—and where their marketing dollars will make the biggest difference.

That’s where a fractional marketing professional comes in.

Think of it as having an experienced marketing leader on your team without the expense of hiring one full-time. I can step in for an hour, a day, a project or on an ongoing basis to help you:

• Create a clear marketing plan
• Choose the right advertising opportunities
• Develop stronger messaging and offers
• Manage vendors and campaigns
• Connect marketing directly to sales

In other words, I help take marketing off the business owner’s already-overloaded plate.

Here are three things most business owners don’t know about marketing and advertising:

1. Repetition matters more than constantly creating something new.

Most people need to see or hear your message several times before they remember you—or take action. Consistency usually beats jumping from one new idea to another.

2. Your best marketing message may already be hiding in your customers’ questions.

The questions customers repeatedly ask reveal what they’re worried about, what they value and what might keep them from buying. Those questions can become some of your strongest ads, videos and social posts.

3. More advertising does not automatically mean better results.

A smaller, focused campaign with the right audience, message and follow-up can outperform a larger campaign that tries to reach everyone.

Good marketing should not feel like throwing money at the wall and hoping something sticks. It should have a purpose, a plan and a way to measure what is working.

That’s exactly what I help small businesses do through Starfish Communications.

Need help figuring out where to start? Let’s have a conversation. No pressure and no cookie-cutter sales pitch—just an honest look at what your business needs.

✨ Women, on their own terms—and apparently dogs, too. 🐾💗

After 25 years in marketing, advertising and media, I decided it was time to take my own advice: know what makes you different, trust your experience and build something that feels like you.

That’s exactly why I reopened Starfish Communications.

I help local businesses bring all the pieces of their marketing together—advertising, social media, websites, branding, lead generation and sales—so they stop wasting money on scattered ideas and start following one smart strategy.

Think of me as your fractional Chief Marketing Officer: executive-level marketing experience without the cost of hiring a full-time executive.

Hire me for an hour, a day, a project or as an ongoing part of your team.

My very important pooch has already approved the strategy. She is still reviewing the tea service. ☕️🐶
