๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ I drove past the courthouse today. The flag was still at half-mast.

President Trump ordered flags lowered nationwide for Dolly Parton. That same week, Democratic leaders were honoring her too. In a country that can turn almost anything into red versus blue, somehow Dolly remainedโ€ฆ Dolly.

I don't think that's an accident. She spent decades building something marketers rarely talk about enough: ๐—ด๐—ผ๐—ผ๐—ฑ๐˜„๐—ถ๐—น๐—น.

She entertained people๐ŸŽค, helped children learn to read ๐Ÿ“š, invested back into where she came from, treated people well, and generally stayed out of the business of telling everyone what they should believe. The result was a reputation strong enough that people who disagree about almost everything could still agree on her.

Businesses spend a lot of money trying to get noticed. Goodwill is different. You can't buy it in a campaign. You earn it one customer, one decision, and one year at a time. ๐Ÿ’›

And maybe that's the bigger lesson from Dolly: you don't always need everyone to agree with you. But it sure helps when they trust you.

Remember this? "IF I (temporary break) SHOULD STAY, I WOULD ONLY BE IN YOUR WAY." in 1992! Whitney's acapella version stops me in my tracks even today. Dolly knew that song was gold so as we mourn the loss of Dolly Parton, it got me thinking about Dolly's journey with such a hit and how she knew it's worth.

Congrats to business owners and their staff who are recognized as the top 3 in their fields for 2026 Best of Southern Maryland today in Southern Maryland Newspaper today. Each category winner will be announced at the Gala held at Rod N Reel Resort on Sept. 16th.
