It’s no secret that Christian-based and open-to-all Berea College in Kentucky was the first in the South to integrate and become co-ed. It’s also no secret that its low-income students are required to work on campus in supporting the mission and operations of the college, and it’s a good model to be considered by others for adoption, considering as reported, “No Berea student has paid for tuition since 1892. It’s the oldest college with continuously free tuition.” Moreover, it boasts highly notable alumni across diverse fields into present day; Berea’s most famous alumnus is Dr. Carter G. Woodson. Now, Berea is making history again.
*Note that the article misspelled Dr. Cheryl Nixon‘s name. She is a Harvard alumna and the first woman to serve as president.
Berea College President Cheryl L. Dixon said it will be the first college in the country to offer such comprehensive coverage.
