🚨 July 10 Update: Instagram Joins Google Search
Hi friends! Andrea here, President and Digital Marketing Director at Xeno Media.
We’re excited about a new change rolling out July 10 that will give social media content even more visibility. Our clients, and our team, spend so much time creating thoughtful, engaging posts. Now, there’s a new way for that content to reach potential customers outside the Instagram app.
Instagram is allowing professional (business and creator) accounts to opt in to search engine indexing. That means public posts, Reels, captions, and even profiles can start showing up in Google search results.
🔍 Why It Matters
Extended visibility: Your content isn’t just limited to Instagram anymore, it can now surface in Google image results and standard web searches.
Search intent meets social: People searching for how-tos, product ideas, trends, or local services might now discover your content through a simple Google search.
✅ How to Make the Most of It
1. Treat captions like mini blog posts
Include clear, relevant keywords (like “how to style a summer outfit” or “easy backyard birthday ideas”) to help your posts get discovered.
2. Use alt text strategically
Alt text isn’t just for accessibility, it’s also a key SEO signal. Describe your images with natural, keyword-rich language.
3. Optimize your profile
Make sure your handle, name, and bio reflect what you do and where you do it. For example: “Chicago wedding photographer” or “Handmade candles in Austin.”
4. Share evergreen content
Posts with long-term value - like tutorials, FAQs, or behind-the-scenes looks - can continue attracting traffic well after they’re published.
5. Track and adjust
Use Google Search Console, GA4, and Instagram Insights to see which posts are driving clicks, and refine your strategy accordingly.
This update is a big step in blending social media and search. Brands that treat Instagram as part of their broader SEO strategy will stand out in this new landscape. If you’re ready to make your content work harder, and show up in more places, let’s talk!
