This is one of my Design Recipes—a framework I created at Jill Lawlor Creative to help small business owners make better design decisions without overthinking or following strict rules. Nothing fancy. Nothing intimidating. Just a clear way to decide what goes where.

➡️ Try this one next time you're designing: Accent Word.

Choose ONE word to carry the visual weight so your message feels clearer, stronger, and easier to read.

One of the easiest DIY graphic design techniques for small business branding is using an ACCENT WORD. That just means choosing ONE important word and making it visually different.

Try changing:
• the color
• the size
• the boldness
• the spacing
• or the style

That tiny change creates instant visual clarity and makes your message easier to read fast. Which is HUGE for social posts, quote graphics, promos, and beginner-friendly branding design.

Quick rule:
If 7 words are emphasized… none of them are emphasized. 😵‍💫

Next time your design feels cluttered or “equally loud,” pick one word to carry the visual weight and let the rest support it.

Part 2 of the Saldarelli Dance Arts reveal.

Beyond the logo, every part of the visual identity was designed to reflect the rhythm, creativity, and encouragement that dancers experience inside the studio. Instead of relying on literal dance imagery, the brand uses soft wave forms, structured layouts, expressive typography, and thoughtful spacing to bring rhythm into the visuals.

The visual direction was designed to feel grounded, welcoming, and expressive—creating a sense of trust for parents while still carrying the creativity and movement that make dance so special.

Typography also played a big role in shaping the overall feel of the brand. The combination of refined serif details and clean, modern sans serif type helps the identity feel approachable, organized, and parent-trusted.

Together, the brand creates a feeling that’s both uplifting and reassuring—something families can feel connected to from the very beginning.

Curious what this kind of clarity could look like for your own brand? Reach out anytime—I’d love to chat.

Thrilled to finally share this brand identity for Saldarelli Dance Arts.

This project was about creating a brand that feels as welcoming and encouraging as the studio itself—a place where dancers and families can grow through every stage of life. The goal was to create something that felt calm, confident, and parent-trusted while still reflecting the creativity and energy that make dance so meaningful.

At the center of the identity is a simplified ‘S’ mark that brings a sense of familiarity, balance, and quiet confidence to the brand. Paired with refined typography and balanced spacing, the logo system creates a sense of professionalism while still feeling warm and approachable.

Every detail was designed to support the kind of experience the studio hopes families feel the moment they walk through the doors: welcoming, encouraging, and thoughtfully led.

More from the brand system coming next week.

If you’ve been thinking about how your brand shows up, reach out anytime—I’d love to talk about what an intentional identity could look like for your business.

Somewhere along the way, “simple website” started meaning:
—vague copy
—random sections
—one page with no direction

But a simple website can absolutely work — if it’s built with intention.
—Clear messaging.
—A thoughtful structure.
—A path through the site.
—A clear next step.

You do not need the Taj Mahal of websites. But you do need a website that helps people understand what you do and what to do next.

Most visitors give a website just a few seconds before deciding whether it’s worth their attention. Which means your website doesn’t need to be bigger or fancier.

It needs to be clearer.
—Clear about what you do.
—Clear about who it’s for.
—Clear about what someone should do next.

That’s what actually keeps people moving through a website.

A lot of people focus on colors, fonts, and layouts first. Meanwhile the real problem is usually:
—unclear messaging
—no real flow
—no obvious next step

People land on your website asking:
“Am I in the right place?”

And if the answer isn’t obvious, they leave.

A website can look good and still not work.

Your graphic probably doesn’t need more stuff.

One of the biggest DIY design mistakes is making EVERYTHING feel equally important. Big text. Big photos. Extra icons. Random decorations. Suddenly your layout looks like it drank six energy drinks before clocking in.

A better move?

Pick ONE thing to lead the design:
One headline.
One image.
One key message.

Then let everything else support it quietly. That’s how you create cleaner graphics, better visual clarity, and stronger small business branding without needing fancy design skills.

Quick checklist for better DIY graphic design:
✔ Choose one focal point
✔ Keep supporting text smaller
✔ Leave breathing room
✔ Remove decorations that don’t help the message
✔ Let the empty space do some work

Less clutter = stronger branding. Every time.

Your website isn’t just there to exist. It’s there to do something.

A lot of small business websites end up acting like online brochures — a few pages, some information, a contact form at the bottom — but no real direction.

The problem usually isn’t design. It’s clarity.

People land on your website asking:
—Am I in the right place?
—Is this for me?
—What do I do next?

And if the answer isn’t obvious pretty quickly… they move on.

You don’t need the Taj Mahal of websites. But you do need a website that helps people understand what you do, why it matters, and where to go next.

Simple works.

But only when it’s intentional.

I shared a post recently about how the first idea is rarely the most interesting one.

It’s something I see all the time in my work—and honestly, it changed how I think about ideas in general.

Not just in design. In everything.

It’s easy to stop when something feels “good enough.”

But the ideas that really stand out usually come after that point.

If you missed it the first time, I’d love for you to give it a read.
