Most exposure data is trusted without question.
But what if the biggest risk isn’t the result…it’s everything that happened before the sample even reached the lab?

Quality control doesn’t start at analysis, it starts at the very beginning. And if that part is overlooked, everything that follows is built on uncertainty.

Did You Know?

In 2024, the EPA finalized new regulations restricting the use of methylene chloride under the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA). Companies that continue to use it must now implement a Workplace Chemical Protection Program and meet significantly tighter exposure limits.

What this means for employers:
Facilities must verify worker exposure levels and demonstrate that employees are protected under the new limits. For many organizations, this starts with baseline exposure monitoring.

What you should know:
Without air monitoring data, it’s difficult to demonstrate compliance or evaluate the effectiveness of your controls.

How to monitor:
Solvents such as methylene chloride can be evaluated using organic v***r monitoring badges.

Assay Technology offers several solutions, including the 525 TraceAir® II Organic V***r Monitor, designed to collect full-shift or short term exposure data while remaining lightweight and unobtrusive for workers.

Are your results a Time Weighted Average?
Yes. Every reported result is a TWA, meaning it reflects the average concentration over the exact period you sampled.

What most safety professionals are really asking is whether it is an 8-hour TWA. The answer is simple. It is an 8-hour TWA only if you sampled for 8 hours. If you sampled for 6 hours, it is a 6-hour TWA. If you sampled for 12 hours, it is a 12-hour TWA.

Converting to an 8-hour TWA requires professional judgment about what happened outside your sampling window. Was exposure zero after monitoring stopped? Did it continue at the same rate? Because the lab cannot make that determination, adjustments must be based on site knowledge and professional judgment.

This article walks through the decision logic and the straightforward calculation used when converting to an 8-hour TWA, including conservative assumptions for extended shifts.

Are a few samples really enough to understand chemical exposure risk?

Research shows workplace exposures are far more variable than most of us expect, and that variability is often underestimated when decisions are based on limited sampling. Exposure data typically follow a skewed (lognormal) pattern, so the highest risks are easy to miss if you rely on intuition or minimal data.

This is why guidance from the American Industrial Hygiene Association emphasizes statistical analysis, “sampling till you’re sure”, using enough data to understand where the 95th percentile truly falls, not just the average.

Key takeaways for chemical safety professionals:
▪️ Workplace exposures vary widely, even within similar jobs.
▪️ A few samples may often underestimate risk
▪️ Strong decisions require statistically sound, defensible data

Accurate exposure data isn’t academic, it directly informs controls, monitoring strategies, and worker protection.

When we dive deeper into the data, we move from assumptions to confidence and from compliance to care.

Are you collecting enough data to truly protect your workforce?

Workplace chemical monitoring isn’t about meeting minimum requirements; it’s about gathering reliable exposure data that supports real safety decisions.

At Assay Technology, protecting people starts long before sampling begins. From quality testing of incoming materials and controlled production, to analysis validation and equipment calibration, every step is designed to ensure the data you receive is accurate and defensible.

Why it matters:
✔ Exposure data drives safety decisions
✔ Inadequate sampling leads to blind spots
✔ Reliable data protects people, not just processes

Sample across tasks, shifts, and conditions using validated media you can trust.

When the data is robust, decisions are clearer, and workplaces are safer.
