I spoke at Michele Jewett's Q4 Leader Group yesterday to a group of 10 CEOs on Sales and Marketing Alignment. It was powerful discussion with live polling and debate over 11 best practices. Here are the highlights: 😊

1. Score Your Relationships to Prioritize Outreach
Develop a scoring system for the people in your network—clients, prospects, and colleagues alike. Rank each contact from 1–5 on two dimensions:
- Strength of relationship
- Ability to influence you getting work or projects

The maximum score for any contact is 10. This simple system helps you prioritize your weekly outreach based on real opportunity and connection.

2. Review Wins and Losses Regularly
Schedule recurring monthly or weekly meetings to review new business performance. Celebrate the wins—but more importantly, use the losses as learning moments. Create a culture where the team can honestly ask:
- What did we learn?
- What could we do better next time?

Too often, we rush past losses or look to assign blame. But in truth, we tend to learn far more from what didn’t work than what did. Embrace the discomfort – it is where growth happens.

3. Track Slip/Loss with Existing Clients
Run a quarterly slip/loss report on your current accounts. If business with a client has decreased significantly—or they've left altogether—it’s essential to find out why. You may not win them back, but you will gain insights that can help you retain and better support your remaining clients.

4. Use Data to Drive Strategy
Data is only useful if it informs action. Too often, metrics are collected and reviewed without follow-through. Ask openly in team meetings:
- What do these metrics tell us?
- How do we use this information to improve?

Data should be a compass, not a trophy. Let it guide your decision-making, shape your strategy, and spark the changes your business needs.

Let’s keep moving forward—intentionally, strategically, and together.

Marketing Guru Claims He Can Align Sales Teams Using Only Martial Arts, Mindfulness, and a Half-Decaf Cold Brew.

LOS ANGELES, CA — In a bold move that left both marketing interns and seasoned CEOs slightly intimidated yet weirdly inspired, Seth Avergon has declared that he can solve your company’s sales and marketing problems faster than you can say “synergistic KPIs.” Armed with decades of strategy, a black belt in Ninjutsu, and a LinkedIn presence that radiates quiet power, Avergon now serves as a Fractional CMO, executive coach, and occasional philosophical threat to mediocrity.
“I don’t just help you build a funnel,” said Avergon, gazing stoically into the middle distance. “I help you become the funnel.”
Known for turning struggling brands into lean, lead-generating machines, Avergon combines battle-tested business acumen with the kind of wisdom usually found in mountaintop scrolls or Apple keynote speeches. Colleagues report he once aligned a marketing team and a sales team using only a haiku, a flip chart, and eye contact.
In his free time, Seth mentors younger entrepreneurs, trains with ancient bladed weapons, and can often be found silently judging your CRM hygiene from across the room.
When asked for comment, a former client simply whispered, “He doesn’t run strategy. Strategy runs through him.”
