I recently audited an eCommerce brand that was struggling to scale with Google ads.
One look into the ad account let me know that there was a big mess behind the scenes.
Here's an audit I did of it.
Make sure your brand doesn't have the same issues!
1. Conversion tracking
My first step was to check the tracking.
And I found out that the conversion tracking tag, the one that should only fire on the thank you page, was active on the home page.
This meant visitors to the home pg were getting counted as purchases.

2. Campaign strategy
After understanding tracking issues, I dove deep into the campaigns.
Some major issues I found here:
- Same products in both Pmax and standard shopping
- Bunch of assets inside a Pmax running at $13/d
- Unnecessary TROAS restrictions
Issues slowing scale.
Most eCommerce brands are running with these issues.
Without a proper layout for the campaigns, scale is limited.
A proper foundation with a proper funnel is key to scaling with Google.
3. Keyword research
To figure out if the campaigns were the issue for lack of scale or the niche itself, I did some keyword analysis.
I found out that niche was not an issue in any way because it had over 1m searches per month.
This made me realize the ad strategy was wrong.
4. Competitor analysis
The last step of this audit involved spying on competitors using Google shopping.
There were many competitors appearing for some major keywords this brand wanted to sell under.
A good sign.
This meant competition was healthy and brands were making $$.
