I recently audited an eCommerce brand that was struggling to scale with Google ads.

One look into the ad account let me know that there was a big mess behind the scenes.

Here's an audit I did of it.

Make sure your brand doesn't have the same issues!

1. Conversion tracking

My first step was to check the tracking.

And I found out that the conversion tracking tag, the one that should only fire on the thank you page, was active on the home page.

This meant visitors to the home pg were getting counted as purchases.

2. Campaign strategy

After understanding tracking issues, I dove deep into the campaigns.

Some major issues I found here:

- Same products in both Pmax and standard shopping
- Bunch of assets inside a Pmax running at $13/d
- Unnecessary TROAS restrictions

Issues slowing scale.

Most eCommerce brands are running with these issues.

Without a proper layout for the campaigns, scale is limited.

A proper foundation with a proper funnel is key to scaling with Google.

3. Keyword research

To figure out if the campaigns were the issue for lack of scale or the niche itself, I did some keyword analysis.

I found out that niche was not an issue in any way because it had over 1m searches per month.

This made me realize the ad strategy was wrong.

4. Competitor analysis

The last step of this audit involved spying on competitors using Google shopping.

There were many competitors appearing for some major keywords this brand wanted to sell under.

A good sign.

This meant competition was healthy and brands were making $$.

This is a similar process we go through when auditing any new eCom brand that works with us.

I normally don’t like using the word ‘guarantee’ when it comes to eCommerce. However, there are definitely a few things you can do which bring you closer towards the path of success.

One of the first things you must never do is cut yourself too short. This means choosing a niche or set of products which helps keep you afloat and well above the profitability range.

Ideally, this should be $30+.

But just having the right kinds of products isn’t enough. You need to make sure that you’re advertising those products on the right ads platform.

Don’t choose something thousands of others are already using to sell the exact same product.

One thing you want to understand is that you’re going to face hurdles along the way. Lots of them.

That’s why it’s always recommended that you work with other mentors or agencies which have basically ‘been there and done that’. Makes life easy.

Despite what road you take, make sure to add in a strong backend. In 2022, it is simply not acceptable to run an eCom store without a strong backend.

Fuel your entire system with a mix of seasonal and steady products and you have just ‘guaranteed’ your eCommerce success.

In 2022, if you’re planning on using Google Ads in any way, shape, or form, you need to focus on branding.

But most people get the idea of branding wrong.

There are really just 3 main things you need to get right when it comes to branding and Google Ads.

The first thing you need to do is focus on a branded search campaign. These campaigns are created to target those individuals searching for your brand name.

Branded search campaigns are extremely important because in many cases, if your store has any type of reputation, your competitors will be targeting your brand name and stealing your customers.

This brings me to the second thing you need to get right; the google search network. Don’t be lazy; your business needs an omnipresence.

Launch some Google Search campaigns and let your customers notice you through those as well.

But this goes for the advertising platforms as well.

Let your audience come from multiple different sources as that can help feed data to the Google Ads algorithm.

💰 For those of you on Google Ads or thinking about starting, boy do I have a story to share.

Branded search campaigns have been the talk of the town recently and there's a BIG reason why.

For those of you who don't know what that is, it's basically a Search campaign run for your eCom brand name.

Basically one of the first campaigns I set up on my clients' stores.

But Shri, why set this up if they're ALREADY searching for your brand? Great question; two reasons why.

Competitors might be running ads for your eCom brand name.

When someone types your brand name on Google, their ads might be popping up at the top, causing you LOST sales.

Other eCom stores with a similar name to yours might be ranking above you. If you run XYZstore.com and they run XYZstore.co or .net, a branded search campaign can ensure your visitors come to YOU, not them.

So why is this the FIRST campaign we setup and what are the results like?
