Incase you didn't really know him, today we remember a leader whose name became bigger than a title β the late Paramount Chief Mpezeni IV.
Born David Njengembazo Jele, he dedicated decades of his life to preserving culture, strengthening tradition, and leading the Ngoni people with pride and dignity. He ascended to the throne in 1982 and became one of Zambiaβs longest-serving traditional leaders. His leadership helped keep the rich Ngoni heritage alive while making cultural celebrations like Ncβwala symbols of identity and unity for generations.
Despite leading one of Zambiaβs largest and most influential tribes, he was remembered by many as a peopleβs person β a leader who saw humanity before tribe, welcomed people from different backgrounds, and understood that unity was greater than division.
His passing is not only a loss to the Ngoni people, but to Zambia as a whole. His legacy will remain in the traditions he protected, the people he inspired, and the unity he stood for.
Rest well, Inkosi Yamakhosi. Your footprint remains. ποΈπΏπ²
