She was fifteen when soldiers rode into the canyon, rifles glinting in the noon sun, orders in their pockets telling her people they no longer belonged on the land that had cradled them for centuries.
By sundown, they expected the Chiricahua Apache to be gone—marched, chained, relocated like cattle.
They did not expect **Nayeli Doshee**.
She was small, quiet, careful with her words—
the kind of girl who listened more than she spoke,
who could track a deer across bare stone,
who knew every hidden waterhole, every shadowed pass.
But the day the soldiers came, she stepped forward with a fire no one had seen before.
Her people called her *Little Wind* because she moved softly.
That day, she became a storm.

Nayeli grew up in the red canyons of Arizona, wrapped in a world older than any map.
Her mother taught her the songs of the mountains.
Her grandfather taught her to read the sky, to find direction from the stars.
Her father taught her the truth every Apache child knew:
“This land is not where we live.
It is who we are.”
But the world outside the canyons was changing.
Whispers carried through traders and scouts:
Forts. Treaties. Soldiers.
Removal.
Her people tried to stay invisible.
The land kept them hidden—until it couldn’t anymore.

The soldiers claimed the Apache had to relocate “for their own good.”
They claimed the land belonged to someone else now.
They claimed the government had spoken.
But Nayeli had watched enough broken promises to know:
Those claims were lies wrapped in paper and signatures.
When her chief met with the officer in charge, she stood in the back of the council circle, listening.
The officer assured them no violence would occur—
just obedience.
Nayeli saw the truth in the set of his jaw.
He didn’t come to talk.
He came to take.
That night she did not sleep.
She climbed to the ridge above the camp, feeling the cold wind sting her face, and made a decision that would change her people’s fate:
She would not let the soldiers march them away.

Before dawn, she slipped into the soldiers’ camp.
She moved through shadows like a whisper.
She counted horses. Counted rifles. Counted men.
They were too many to fight head-on.
But they were blind to the land.
Nayeli smiled—
the first smile she’d had in days.
She didn’t need to defeat the soldiers.
She just needed to outthink them.

She led her people into the high canyons before sunrise, guiding them through a maze only she fully understood.
She blocked trails with boulders.
Covered tracks with brush.
Used the echoing walls to send false signals—footsteps bouncing in every direction.
When the soldiers followed, she was already two steps ahead.
One moment she lured them into dry washes that collapsed under their horses.
Another moment she led them into a dead-end ravine where the sun baked them until they turned back.
Every time they thought they had her trapped, she vanished into stone and silence.
For three days she led the chase.
For three nights she kept her people moving, feeding them, calming them, protecting them.
It wasn’t war.
It wasn’t violence.
It was survival sharpened into brilliance.

By the fourth morning, the soldiers gave up.
They returned to the fort with nothing—not a prisoner, not a clue, not a victory.
Nayeli stood on the canyon rim, watching them disappear into the distance.
Her legs trembled.
Her chest burned.
But she didn’t fall.
Her people gathered behind her, silent.
Not because she was a warrior.
But because she had become something even rarer:
A protector who refused to spill blood,
a strategist born from the land itself,
a girl who outsmarted an empire.

Years later, when forced removal swept across tribes like a dust storm, old stories resurfaced around campfires:
Stories of a young Apache girl who carved safety out of stone,
who used the land as her shield,
who refused to let her people be erased.
They never wrote her name in army reports.
They never recorded her in government files.
But her people remembered.
Nayeli Doshee—*Little Wind*, the girl who became a storm.
She kept her homeland alive long after the soldiers rode away.
Because sometimes the strongest warrior
is the one who fights to keep her family together—

Born June 22, 1952, on the Six Nations Reserve in Ohsweken, Ontario, Mr. Greene is a 72 year old FIRST NATIONS Canadian actor who belongs to the ONEIDA tribe. He has worked on stage, in film, and in TV productions in Canada, the U.K., and the U.S.

He was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his 1990 performance in "Dances with Wolves". Other films you may have seen him in include Thunderheart, Maverick, Die Hard with a Vengeance, the Green Mile, and Wind River. Graham Greene graduated from the Centre for Indigenous Theatre in 1974 & immediately began performing in professional theatre in Toronto and England, while also working as an audio technician for area rock bands. His TV debut was in 1979 and his screen debut in 1983. His acting career has now spanned over 4 decades & he remains as busy as ever. In addition to the Academy Award nomination for Dance with Wolves, he has been consistently recognized for his work, and also received nominations in 1994, 2000, 2004, 2006, and 2016. Graham Greene lives in Toronto, Canada, married since 1994, and has 1 adult daughter.

This is written by Chief Dan George,
In the course of my lifetime I have lived in two distinct cultures. I was born into a culture that lived in communal houses. My grandfather’s house was eighty feet long. It was called a smoke house, and it stood down by the beach along the inlet. All my grandfather’s sons and their families lived in this dwelling. Their sleeping apartments were separated by blankets made of bull rush weeds, but one open fire in the middle served the cooking needs of all. In houses like these, throughout the tribe, people learned to live with one another; learned to respect the rights of one another. And children shared the thoughts of the adult world and found themselves surrounded by aunts and uncles and cousins who loved them and did not threaten them. My father was born in such a house and learned from infancy how to love people and be at home with them.
And beyond this acceptance of one another there was a deep respect for everything in nature that surrounded them. My father loved the earth and all its creatures. The earth was his second mother. The earth and everything it contained was a gift from See-see-am…and the way to thank this great spirit was to use his gifts with respect.
I remember, as a little boy, fishing with him up Indian River and I can still see him as the sun rose above the mountain top in the early morning…I can see him standing by the water’s edge with his arms raised above his head while he softly moaned…”Thank you, thank you.” It left a deep impression on my young mind.
And I shall never forget his disappointment when once he caught me gaffing for fish “just for the fun of it.” “My son” he said, “The Great Spirit gave you those fish to be your brothers, to feed you when you are hungry. You must respect them. You must not kill them just for the fun of it.”
This then was the culture I was born into and for some years the only one I really knew or tasted. This is why I find it hard to accept many of the things I see around me.
I see people living in smoke houses hundreds of times bigger than the one I knew. But the people in one apartment do not even know the people in the next and care less about them.
It is also difficult for me to understand the deep hate that exists among people. It is hard to understand a culture that justifies the killing of millions in past wars, and it at this very moment preparing bombs to kill even greater numbers. It is hard for me to understand a culture that spends more on wars and weapons to kill, than it does on education and welfare to help and develop.
It is hard for me to understand a culture that not only hates and fights his brothers but even attacks nature and abuses her.
I see my white brothers going about blotting out nature from his cities. I see him strip the hills bare, leaving ugly wounds on the face of mountains. I see him tearing things from the bosom of mother earth as though she were a monster, who refused to share her treasures with him. I see him throw poison in the waters, indifferent to the life he kills there; and he chokes the air with deadly fumes.
My white brother does many things well for he is more clever than my people but I wonder if he has ever really learned to love at all. Perhaps he only loves the things that are outside and beyond him. And this is, of course, not love at all, for man must love all creation or he will love none of it. Man must love fully or he will become the lowest of the animals. It is the power to love that makes him the greatest of them all…for he alone of all animals is capable of love.
Love is something you and I must have. We must have it because our spirit feeds upon it. We must have it because without it we become weak and faint. Without love our self esteem weakens. Without it our courage fails. Without love we can no longer look out confidently at the world. Instead we turn inwardly and begin to feed upon our own personalities and little by little we destroy ourselves.
You and I need the strength and joy that comes from knowing that we are loved. With it we are creative. With it we march tirelessly. With it, and with it alone, we are able to sacrifice for others.
There have been times when we all wanted so desperately to feel a reassuring hand upon us…there have been lonely times when we so wanted a strong arm around us…I cannot tell you how deeply I miss my wife’s presence when I return from a trip. Her love was my greatest joy, my strength, my greatest blessing.
I am afraid my culture has little to offer yours. But my culture did prize friendship and companionship. It did not look on privacy as a thing to be clung to, for privacy builds walls and walls promote distrust. My culture lived in a big family community, and from infancy people learned to live with others.
My culture did not prize the hoarding of private possessions, in fact, to hoard was a shameful thing to do among my people. The Indian looked on all things in nature as belonging to him and he expected to share them with others and to take only what he needed.
Everyone likes to give as well as receive. No one wishes only to receive all the time. We have taken something from your culture…I wish you had taken something from our culture…for there were some beautiful and good things in it.
Soon it will be too late to know my culture, for integration is upon us and soon we will have no values but yours. Already many of our young people have forgotten the old ways. And many have been shamed of their Indian ways by scorn and ridicule. My culture is like a wounded deer that has crawled away into the forest to bleed and die alone.
The only thing that can truly help us is genuine love. You must truly love, be patient with us and share with us. And we must love you—with a genuine love that forgives and forgets…a love that gives the terrible sufferings your culture brought ours when it swept over us like a wave crashing along a beach…with a love that forgets and lifts up its head and sees in your eyes an answering love of trust and acceptance.
This is brotherhood…anything less is not worthy of the name.

He was born on July 24, 1899, belonging to the Tsleil-Waututh (Salish) tribe, in a settlement near North Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. He became widely known for his acting career, especially in films portraying Indigenous characters.
Chief Dan George gained further prominence after his role in the classic film "Little Big Man" (1970), where he portrayed a wise, philosophical elder named Old Lodge Skins. This role earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor, making him the first Canadian Indigenous person to receive such a nomination.
In addition to his acting career, Chief Dan George was renowned for his writing and poetry, expressing his love and reverence for Indigenous culture. The country lost a giant. These men served a country that looked down upon them as second-class citizens or even worse. They performed admirably during battle using the Code Talker system that helped battlefield commanders make quick decisions to win battles and save their fellow soldiers/marines lives. They won the war. Came home and couldn't tell anyone what they did because it was still classified until 1968. They were treated like s**t after the war and many struggled but they never turned their back on their country. They were proud of what they did. Rightfully so. They were extraordinary heroes but looked at themselves more as husbands, fathers, brothers, and mentors to the next generation. May we never forget their sacrifices and may we never forget their names. We must pass to each generation, their names and stories. May God rest their souls.

friends we must first of all say, we are 👉 for you this week of Thanksgiving and always! Your interest and encouragement on the Mountain Carving progress is sincerely appreciated!
We are also👉 thankful for the work we are able to do each day and the fact that new equipment and technology has enabled us to improve upon our rock removal efficiency. The lift capabilities of the tower crane is resulting in a steady increase of tonnage removed when compared to previous numbers. In addition, the larger space of the new Mountain shop combined with the tower crane's reach abilities make it possible to fabricate and place work platforms like the one you see in this photo. Without the tower crane it would be extremely difficult, if not impossible, to place platforms in these areas. We could go on and on - there is so much to be👉 thankful for!

Legend of the White Buffalo

The White Buffalo are sacred to many Native Americans. The Lakota (Sioux) Nation has passed down The Legend of the White Buffalo–a story now approximately 2,000 years old–at many council meetings, sacred ceremonies, and through the tribe’s storytellers. There are several variations, but all are meaningful and tell of the same outcome. Have communication with the Creator through prayer with clear intent for Peace, Harmony, and Balance for all life living in the Earth Mother.
Spirituality among Natives Americans and non-Native Americans has been a strong force for those who believe in the power of the Great Spirit or God.
It matters not what you call the Creator. What matters is that you pray to give thanks for your blessings and trust the guidance given to you from the world of Spirit. Many truths about Spirit are told and handed down from one generation to the next.
The legend of the White Buffalo Calf Woman tells how the People had lost the ability to communicate with the Creator. The Creator sent the sacred White Buffalo Calf Woman to teach the People how to pray with the Pipe. With that Pipe, seven sacred ceremonies were given for the people to abide in order to ensure a future with harmony, peace, and balance.
Legend says that long ago, two young men were out hunting when from out of nowhere came a beautiful maiden dressed in white buckskin. One of the hunters looked upon her and recognizing her as a wakan, or sacred being lowered his eyes. The second hunter approached her with lust in his eyes desiring her for his woman. White Buffalo Calf Woman beckoned the lustful warrior to her, and as he approached a cloud of dust arose around them causing them to be hidden from view. When the dust settled, nothing but a pile of bones lay next to her.
As she walked toward the respectful young hunter, she explained to him that she had merely fulfilled the other man’s desire, allowing him, within that brief moment, to live a lifetime, die and decay. White Buffalo Calf Woman instructed the young man to go back to the People and tell them to prepare for her arrival to teach them of the way to pray. The young hunter obeyed.
When White Buffalo Calf woman arrived with the sacred bundle (the prayer pipe) she taught the People of the seven sacred ways to pray. These prayers are through ceremonies that include the Sweat Lodge for purification; the Naming Ceremony for child naming; the Healing Ceremony to restore health to the body, mind and spirit; the adoption ceremony for making of relatives; the marriage ceremony for uniting male and female; the Vision Quest for communing with the Creator for direction and answers to one’s life; and the Sundance Ceremony to pray for the well-being of all the People.
When the teaching of the sacred ways was complete, White Buffalo Calf Woman told the people she would again return for the sacred bundle that she left with them. Before leaving, she told them that within her were the four ages and that she would look back upon the People in each age, returning at the end of the fourth age, to restore harmony and spirituality to a troubled land. She walked a short distance, she looked back towards the people and sat down. When she arose they were amazed to see she had become a black buffalo. Walking a little further, the buffalo laid down, this time arising as a yellow buffalo. The third time the buffalo walked a little further and this time arose as a red buffalo. Walking a little further it rolled on the ground and rose one last time as a white buffalo calf signaling the fulfillment of the White Buffalo Calf prophecy.
The changing of the four colors of the White Buffalo Calf Woman represents the four colors of man–white, yellow, red and black. These colors also represent the four directions, north, east, south, and west. The sacred bundle that was left to the Lakota people is still with the People in a sacred place on the Cheyenne River Indian reservation in South Dakota. It is kept by a man known as the Keeper of the White Buffalo Calf Pipe, Arvol Looking Horse.
The legend of the White Buffalo Calf Woman remains ever promising in this age of spiritual enlightenment and conscious awareness. In today’s world of confusion and war, many of us are looking for signs of peace.
“With the return of the White Buffalo, it is a sign that prayers are being heard, that the sacred pipe is being honored, and that the promises of prophecy are being fulfilled. White Buffalo signals a time of abundance and plenty.”
Though harsh as the world we live in may be throughout recorded history there have been spiritual leaders teaching peace, hope, and balance (synergy) amongst all life. This was taught by great teachers such as Jesus, Buddha, the Dali Lama’s, and Native American leaders.
Chief Crazy Horse, Chief Seattle, and Chief Red Cloud are a few of the visionary leaders who committed their lives to bring peace, and internal happiness to all who they touched. They were tangible signs of goodwill toward all men, women, and children.
