"The French Bulldog was found behind a restaurant with a birthday balloon still tied to his leash.
The balloon had gone flat.
Its string was wrapped around a broken plastic chair.
The dog was underneath a dumpster, staring at a piece of cake someone had thrown away.
The restaurant worker who found him assumed he had simply wandered off.
Then she noticed the collar.
It had a name, but the tag had been scratched almost completely blank.
At the clinic, the vet discovered an untreated ear infection and a small fracture in one back leg. The dog had clearly been in pain for days.
The strange evidence was the balloon.
Printed on it were the words “Happy 8th Birthday.”
The rescue center posted the photograph, expecting someone to recognize him.
They did.
A woman contacted them and said the dog had been stolen from her backyard three weeks earlier.
She had searched every neighborhood nearby.
The dog had apparently been used briefly for breeding and abandoned after he became injured.
The woman arrived carrying the birthday cake she had kept frozen since the day he disappeared.
She placed one tiny piece in front of him.
The Bulldog smelled it, then ignored the food and climbed directly into her arms.
The balloon had been found behind a restaurant.
The dog had been found there too.
But the most important thing he found that day was the person who never stopped looking."
