ASEAN members prioritize cooperation, trade to mitigate impact of geopolitical tensions: Malaysian FM

LANGKAWI, Malaysia, Jan. 20 (Xinhua) -- Members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) will close ranks to ensure that trade and economic cooperation among them proceed unhindered in the face of geopolitical tensions and other disruptions, Malaysian Foreign Minister Mohamad Hasan said here on Sunday.

Members of the grouping are in agreement and share the same position on the need to maintain the grouping's centrality and neutrality and will work toward protecting their interests in the face of conflict, mass displacements, natural disasters, technological revolutions, and economic shocks, Mohamad said at a press briefing following an ASEAN foreign ministers' meeting.

"As we chart the course for the region for the next 20 years through the ASEAN Community Vision 2045 and its strategic plans, ASEAN must consolidate and reinforce its unity, solidarity and centrality," he said.

"ASEAN must also build geoeconomic resilience to prepare at all times for emergencies and be crisis ready," Mohamad said, adding that ASEAN must continue to promote intraregional trade and investment "to shield us from further shocks."

Mohamad said that as chair of the grouping for 2025, Malaysia will prioritize efforts to maintain regional peace, stability and prosperity through dialogue and diplomacy, based on the principles of ASEAN unity and centrality, adding that the grouping is determined not to be drawn into geopolitical tensions but will seek to protect its own interests.

"We also underscored that ASEAN must remain in the driving seat of regional architecture to continue to determine the direction and future of the region and our community," he said.

Malaysia eyes blockchain innovation, taking notes from the UAE

Malaysia seems to be taking inspiration from the UAE’s blockchain success, signalling its intent to join the digital finance revolution.

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim recently returned from a three-day visit to Abu Dhabi with a clear message: Malaysia isn’t sitting this one out. Following discussions with Binance co-founder Changpeng “CZ” Zhao and Abu Dhabi officials, Anwar expressed a strong interest in shaping policies around cryptocurrency and blockchain technology to keep Malaysia competitive in this fast-evolving space.

Speaking to Malaysian media, Anwar shared insights from his trip, which focused on topics like digital transformation, artificial intelligence, and the future of data centres. He emphasised that Malaysia needs to adapt quickly to meet these emerging demands.

“We have talked about digital transformation, data centres and artificial intelligence. We now face demands which require us to think about making significant changes,” Anwar said. “I had lengthy discussions with the Abu Dhabi leadership and Changpeng Zhao, co-founder of the world’s largest cryptocurrency platform Binance. I proposed several months ago how our agencies, including security, treasury and Bank Negara study how Malaysia can explore this so we aren’t left behind. Ensuring that is regulated could safeguard the people’s interests and prevent leakages.”

The Prime Minister plans to consult his Cabinet and has already tasked major agencies like the Treasury and Securities Commission to examine the details. He’s also working on a proposal to outline the regulatory frameworks needed to guide Malaysia’s entry into the cryptocurrency space.

Anwar acknowledged that Malaysia wouldn’t be starting from scratch. Instead, the country will look to others – like Binance and the UAE – for guidance. “We need to discuss this in detail, leave behind the old business model and give meaning to this digital finance policy,” he said.

He pointed to the UAE as a prime example of success in this field. “Their leaders are eager to collaborate with us on this. We need to leave behind old business models and give real meaning to digital finance policy,” he explained. While Malaysia has discussed fintech at length in the past, Anwar said it’s time to move beyond just talking. “We should not sit idly by and wait and later be forced to do so after others have done it already,” he said.

Anwar stressed the importance of regulation in safeguarding public interests while preventing financial losses. Comparing blockchain innovation to the transformative power of AI, he warned against complacency. “The is an evolution which happens quickly and requires us to be equally fast. We feel that Malaysia should not be left behind while mired in an old financial system.”

The Prime Minister didn’t shy away from the challenges of embracing new technologies. “As with all new ideas raised, there will be some concerns. We have to train our personnel, develop competency, and get the players to participate,” he said. He also highlighted Malaysia’s strong ties with the UAE, suggesting that collaboration would be key to ensuring Malaysia’s transition goes smoothly. “We told them that we would move on this on the condition that we work as partners to ensure that things are on track.”

To move things forward, Anwar plans to draft a policy paper for the cabinet’s approval, signalling a sense of urgency in his approach.

Malaysia’s proactive stance aligns with broader regional trends, as countries like Singapore and Thailand are also keen to establish themselves as cryptocurrency hubs.

Malaysia mulls nuclear energy amid race for clean energy

Nuclear energy, recognized globally as one of the cleanest energy sources, 'is one option we are considering,’ says Malaysian deputy prime minister

Malaysia is exploring the use of nuclear energy to meet the nation's domestic needs amid the race for clean energy, Deputy Prime Minister Fadillah Yusof said on Tuesday.

He said Kuala Lumpur was considering including nuclear energy in its energy grid as a way of providing “clean and reliable energy.”

Fadillah was addressing a workshop on sustainable development, hosted by Malaysia as it chairs the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) this year.

“Nuclear energy, recognized globally as one of the cleanest energy sources, is one option we are considering,” Fadillah said, according to the Free Malaysia Today news website.

He recalled that more than 20 countries had committed to tripling their nuclear power generation, highlighting its relevance at last year’s UN climate change conference held in Azerbaijan.

Kuala Lumpur has commissioned studies backed by research from the Malaysian Nuclear Agency toward adding nuclear energy to its national grid, he noted.

“These studies focus on advanced nuclear technologies, safety measures, security, regulatory frameworks, and stakeholder engagement, particularly with the public,’’ he said, adding that Malaysia remains committed to achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.

Malaysia assumed the year-long chairmanship of the 10-member ASEAN bloc early this month, with the theme of inclusivity and sustainability.

Kuala Lumpur is expected to host over 300 key meetings and programs throughout the year.

Malaysia looks to streamline international admissions

The Ministry of Higher Education will introduce a new, centralised system to streamline admissions for international students in Malaysia, the country's higher education minister has announced.

Datuk Seri Zambry Abdul Kadir announced the incoming changes to the international admissions process in a speech on January 9, as the ministry continues with its broader higher education transformation agenda, which partly looks to authenticate and standardise qualifications submitted by international applicants looking to meet entry requirements for their desired institutions in Malaysia.

The minister signalled the changes to come during a speech made at the University of Technology Malaysia located in Skudai, and reinforced the ministry’s priority to ensure that all international students coming to Malaysia hold legitimate qualifications, verified by the ministry.

“This centralisation effort is one of 10 key areas outlined under the transformation agenda this year,” Zambry is quoted in the Malay Mail.

The minister signalled a dedicated committee has been established to enact the changes, with preliminary discussions underway to determine how the system will be implemented.

“The centralised system will utilise advanced algorithms and blockchain technology, enabling instant verification of qualifications and certificates submitted by international students,” added Zambry.

Malaysia’s PM denies hiding document on Najib’s home detention

Former Malaysian leader Najib Razak has been pursuing a bid to allow him to serve the rest of his prison sentence at home

Malaysia’s Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has said the government did not conceal any document related to jailed former leader Najib Razak’s home detention, state media reported.
Najib, imprisoned for his role in the country’s 1MDB scandal, has been pursuing a legal bid to compel the government to confirm the existence of and execute an “addendum order” that he said was issued by the former king alongside a pardon he received last year, entitling him to serve the remainder of his jail term at home.
The former prime minister previously had his 12-year sentence halved in a pardon by then-King Sultan Abdullah Ahmad Shah, who was chair of a special pardons board.

Sultan Abdullah’s five-year reign under Malaysia’s unique system of rotating monarchy ended in January 2024.

Najib and the ex-king’s palace say the document exists, with Najib’s legal team saying it has been ignored by authorities.

Anwar said the document was sent to the attorney general and not to him nor any other member of the pardons board, state news agency Bernama reported on Saturday.

Japan, Malaysia to Promote Security Cooperation

Kuala Lumpur, Jan. 10 (Jiji Press)--Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba and his Malaysian counterpart, Anwar Ibrahim, confirmed Friday that their countries will promote cooperation in the security field, as well as in economic areas such as decarbonization and energy.

In their meeting at the Malaysian prime minister's office near Kuala Lumpur, the two leaders agreed to coordinate for a free and open Indo-Pacific region and to closely communicate over the situations in the East and South China seas, bearing in mind China's growing hegemonic moves.

"Strengthening ties with Southeast Asia is one of the top priorities for Japanese diplomacy," Ishiba told a joint press conference with Anwar after their meeting. "We would like to work even more closely with Malaysia, this year's chair of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN)."

During his talks with Anwar, Ishiba said that this year is an extremely important one for deciding whether the world will move toward cooperation, rather than confrontation and division, and rebuild peace. Anwar emphasized his eagerness to work together in the digital, defense and energy fields.

The two leaders agreed to deepen cooperation in the maritime field, including bilateral coast guard ties, and to work closely through the strategic dialogue that started in December and Japan's official security assistance framework for providing defense equipment to like-minded countries.

Malaysia:Interim relief for policyholders impacted by increase in health premium

Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) has announced substantive but interim measures to help health insurance policyholders affected by the increase in premiums of their medical and health insurance and takaful policies (MHIT).

The BNM in a detailed media release issued on 20 December 2024 seeks to alleviate the immediate financial impact to policyholders and preserve MHIT coverage. The release, however, says that broader measures are urgently needed to address the rising medical cost in Malaysia. It said concrete efforts are required to ensure that MHIT products continue to be affordable for the Malaysian public.
