Review of “Banalata Express”: Spoiler-Free
Genre: Drama, Comedy
Personal Rating: 8.5/10
This is one of those movies that truly feels enjoyable when watched in a cineplex with family or friends. Watching it later on OTT or TV might not feel as engaging. Some films are meant for the theatrical ambience with loved ones—this is one of them.
With a large cast of stars and familiar faces, the film starts off a bit slow and takes time to build the plot. However, the humorous dialogues, playful leg-pulling, and well-aligned script would gradually draw you in. The first half focuses more on character development, so the plot doesn’t progress much, but after the interval, it woukd manage to hold your attention throughout.
The movie is based on Humayun Ahmed’s “Kichukkhon,” which I had read a long time ago. So I already knew most of the story, still I enjoyed the film because of its modified dialogues filled with humor and excellent screenplay. In some parts, the director has improved upon the original story, making the film more lively. Although my expectations were slightly higher, overall it’s fair to say that Tanim Noor has delivered a solid adaptation of the book. Those who have read Humayun Ahmed’s works will find glimpses of his essence throughout the film.
All the actors have performed well in their respective roles. However, Mosharraf Karim once again stood out above anything else. This film serves as yet another example of his versatility. Whether it’s wit, guilt, frustration, humor, or sadness—his expressions and acting remain on a completely different level.
If you’re a fan of Humayun Ahmed or looking to spend some quality time with family or friends during the holidays, this is definitely a movie worth watching in theaters.
