Hexiang Beads (Fragrance-Combined Beads)
Hexiang Beads are a treasure of the fragrance culture in the Song Dynasty. Although their origin dates back earlier than the Song Dynasty, they matured and reached their peak during this period. The production process involves blending fragrance materials in accordance with the "monarch-minister-assistant-guide" principle (a traditional Chinese formulation concept emphasizing the hierarchical coordination of ingredients), adding natural binders to make fragrance clay, and then air-drying it to form hard-wearing ornamental accessories.
In the Song Dynasty, literati elevated Hexiang Beads to a pursuit of elegance, and they were also highly praised by the royal court. These beads are exquisite objects that combine pleasant fragrance with spiritual connotations. Today, they have been inherited and revitalized as an intangible cultural heritage.
