🪖 On June 7, 1944 — D‑Day +1 — Mission Hackensack aimed to move men and materiel from the 82nd Airborne into Landing Zone W, north of Les Forges, an area still contested by German forces.

From Upottery Airfield twenty Waco CG‑4A and thirty Horsa gliders carried the 2nd Battalion, 325th GIR along with most of the 2nd Battalion of the 401st GIR (serving as the regiment’s 3rd Battalion) across the Channel toward Normandy.

They arrived near 0900 hours to intense ground fire; landings were widely scattered, complicating consolidation and causing heavy casualties — a stark reminder of how airborne operations depended on luck, timing and rapid local leadership.

A massive formation of 176 C-47s towed 36 CG-4 Wacos and 140 Horsa gliders toward a primary landing zone two miles southeast of Sainte-Mère-Église, with a secondary LZ north of the town. The complex tow-and-release choreography, flown under flak and low cloud, underscored the peril and precision demanded by airborne logistics.

Elmira’s success depended on delivering two battalions of glider artillery and 24 howitzers to consolidate the division’s foothold and turn vulnerable landings into sustainable firepower.
