Native American Dog No, it’s not a wolf, and it’s not a coyote; it’s a Native American dog. These working companion animals were almost lost to history after our Native Americans were segregated onto reservations

Alaska is the state with the highest Native population in the United States, with 15% of the population being Alaska Natives, a figure that rises to nearly 20% when including American Indians. Alaska Natives are classified by language and culture, comprising five main groups: Aleut, Inupiat and St. Lawrence Island Yup’ik, Athabaskan, Yup’ik and Cup’ik, along with Tlingit, Haida, Eyak, and Tsimshian. They have lived in Alaska for thousands of years, developing complex cultures and methods of survival in harsh climatic conditions. While Alaska Natives and American Indians are both considered Indigenous peoples, they are not regarded as the same.
The term "Eskimo" is often considered offensive today, whereas "Inuit" is preferred, meaning "people." Most Alaska Natives prefer to be identified by their tribal names, such as Yupik, Tlingit, or Haida. Their history has been shaped by contact with European settlers beginning in the 18th century and continued until the passage of the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act in 1971, which clearly defined the status of Alaska Natives as a distinct ethnic group.

In 1836, a nine-year-old girl named Cynthia Ann Parker was taken when Comanche warriors raided her family’s home in Texas. Most of her relatives were killed, and she was carried away. For many, this would have been the end of a childhood. But for Cynthia Ann, it was the beginning of a life between two worlds.
The Comanche did not harm her. Instead, they welcomed her. She grew up among them, learning their language, their ways, and their traditions. Over time, she let go of her old identity and truly became part of the tribe. She later married the respected chief Peta Nocona and raised her children in the Comanche way of life.
The little ranch girl was gone. In her place was a strong Comanche woman, her destiny tied to her new people. From her marriage came a son, Quanah Parker — who would become the last great Comanche leader, carrying both heritages within him.
Cynthia Ann’s story is both heartbreaking and inspiring. What began in tragedy grew into a life of strength, love, and legacy. She shows us that history isn’t only written in wars and land, but also in the lives of people who bridge two worlds and pass on new beginnings to the next generations.

Portrait of Iron White Man, a Sioux Native American, around 1900

In 1898, a photographer from New York named Gertrude Käsebier (1852–1934) started a special photo project that became one of the most powerful works of her career. At that time, she was becoming one of the most well-known portrait photographers and a respected artist.

Her inspiration came after she saw a grand parade of Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show, which was headed to Madison Square Garden for several weeks of performances. The parade reminded Käsebier of her own childhood on the Great Plains, where she had happy memories of playing with Native American children.

Excited by the idea, she wrote a letter to William "Buffalo Bill" Cody (1846–1917) asking if she could take portraits of the Sioux Native Americans traveling with the show. He agreed, and soon she started taking formal and casual photographs of Native American men, women, and children in her studio. Over time, she became friends with many of them and continued this meaningful project for more than ten years.

This portrait of Iron White Man shows him in profile view, wearing two strings of beads, a circular ring or headband, a tailored shirt, and a vest — capturing both his strength and dignity.
