It takes alot of work to make a dream happen! Sold my file cabinets today. Office is about packed up except for ongoing work. House is almost ready for renters!

It’s been a lot of work getting everything ready for a move to France. I know there’s more work to come when I’m there. But hopefully that will take more brains than brawn!

I have been making the same soufflé since I was a teenager. I no longer remember where I found the recipe. But I can make it with my eyes closed. Mostly I make it as a spinach souffle and it’s my go-to.

A soufflé has a reputation for being temperamental, but I’ve never found that to be the case with this one. I used to make it with cream or tartar to stabilize the egg whites but one time I didn’t have it, and found that it didn’t matter. I used to be careful about opening the door. But that doesn’t matter either.

What is it about this little die-hard recipe? I made this all through college. I made it in my first apartment. I’ve made it at my new home countless time. I’ve made it above and below sea level. And I’ve made it when there is nothing else to eat because I always have these ingredients on hand (except perhaps for the spinach. Then I just make a cheese souffle).

And now it is going to France with me.😊

At 65, I’m moving to France. But I don't view it as starting over.

I'm taking 40+ years of work, friendships, mistakes, creativity, experience—and two cats (this is George, by the way)—with me.

This is how I think of reinvention now.

Not starting over, but building on all I am and have done.

Two phone tips I’ve learned while preparing to move abroad 📱✈️
I have an iPhone, but these tips apply to other mobile phones as well.

1. If you’re buying a new phone, buy it unlocked.
That means you aren’t tied to a particular carrier. Once you arrive in your new country, you can purchase a local mobile plan.

2. If you want to keep your U.S. phone number, you can “port” it to Google Voice.
This needs to be done while you’re still in the U.S., and I’m planning to start the process a few days before I leave.

The tricky part? Once the number is ported, my current U.S. service will stop. So there may be a short window when I’m between phone plans. Fortunately, I’ll be traveling with a friend, so I’ll have backup for those last couple of days and the trip itself.

I’m not an expert—I’m literally figuring this out from my backyard! 😂 But that’s part of what I’m documenting here: all the little things you have to learn when you decide to move your life to another.
