In a small corner of the San Fernando Valley in the early 1980s, there were two white houses next to each other, separated only by an old, low wooden fence. On one side was Shannen, a mischievous, dramatic brunette who spoke as strongly as a boy. On the other side was Holly, a quieter girl with curious eyes who often carried a small notebook to record her thoughts.

They met at age 6, when Holly and her mother moved next door to Shannen. During a tiring afternoon of cleaning, Holly suddenly saw a head peeking out from behind the fence:

“Are you new? I’m Shannen. Do you like to go horseback riding?”

And so began a friendship that lasted throughout their childhood – and beyond.

The two children played together from morning till night. They built a “house” under a tree, pretended to be a witch and a princess, took turns reading stories and rolling around on the lawn laughing. Once, when Shannen had a fever and had to stay home, Holly drew a series of funny pictures and stuck them on the fence every morning, to “transmit medicine with smiles”.

At the age of 10, the two made a “blood oath” – lightly cutting their fingers and touching them, vowing to always be best friends, no matter how far away they were one day, they would never forget each other.
