Ten years after its original release, “Desert Age: A Rock and Roll Scene History,” the definitive documentary chronicling the people, bands, and events that shaped California’s influential desert rock scene, gets a 10th anniversary re-release on Nov. 20 via Jgeorgiades.com. Featuring Josh Homme, Dave Grohl, Brant Bjork, Nick Oliveri, Jesse Hughes, Mario Lalli and more, “Desert Age” chronicles the Coachella Valley music community that gave rise to a slate of influential bands including Kyuss, Queens of the Stone Age, Fu Manchu, Eagles of Death Metal, Target 13, Mutual Hatred, Dead Issue, and Across the River.

Through extensive interviews with key figures from the scene, rare archival footage and photographs, “Desert Age” captures the people and places behind the emergence of desert rock, documenting a musical community from the late 1970s through the early 1990s whose influence continues to resonate today.

Originally released in 2016, following a successful IndieGoGo campaign, “Desert Age” premiered to a sold-out audience before screening at film festivals and receiving a limited theatrical run. The film was subsequently released on DVD and digital formats, with the original distribution deal expiring in 2020, leaving the film unavailable to audiences for the past six years.

“This was a passion project from the beginning,” director Jason Georgiades explains. “I was working at Vice and on the weekends, I would head to the desert, researching everything I could about not just the music, which I already was a fan of, but of the history of the area, what brought that specific, now unmistakable heaviness, to the bands that came out of the Coachella Valley. Mario Lalli and so many other people embraced my desire to share the incredible story behind these bands, bands like Kyuss and Queens of the Stone Age, and the musicians that came before them.”

The new 10th Anniversary Special Edition expands the original film with additional material centered around Black Flag’s historic 1981 Palm Springs show, including audio and photographs from what would become an early collision between the Southern California punk world and the desert community that would go on to develop its own distinctive musical identity.

The film’s return begins where the story itself began, with a Nov. 7 screening at Festival Theaters in Palm Springs, followed by a Q&A hosted by Coachella Valley historian Natasha Berenek and featuring Mario Lalli, Brant Bjork, Sean Wheeler, Sophia Possidon, director Jason Georgiades, and producer Trevar Cushing. Caspian is back. Following a six-year recording hiatus, the acclaimed post-rock band from Beverly, Mass. returns with their sixth album, CASPIAN, out Oct. 16 via Wax Bodega.

The stirring introduction to the next chapter in Caspian’s career is “Remain,” a sweeping nine-minute study in tension and release. A visually rich short film (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pQ0tbSmOiXE) created by Luke Webster Brown and Elijah Sussman accompanies the track’s arrival.

“Our sixth full length album isn’t particularly uncharted sonic territory for the band but rather a process of self-discovery and coming to terms with the decisions we’ve made and the people we are,” Philip Jamison explains. “CASPIAN revives musical pledges established over 22 years ago, forgotten somewhere along the way but rediscovered here, hopefully, in the form of structural simplicity, approachable melodic sensibilities and being ruthlessly direct as possible with our own emotions. In a culture that shows no signs of slowing down, we find these core tenants more important than ever and it’s our hope that they’re put to the best use we are collectively capable of. We did this record for the 5 of us.”

The band recorded the 39-minute, six-song album in the spring of this year with producer Brett Romnes (Hot Mulligan, The Movielife), drawing from the musical vocabulary the band spent two decades developing while resisting the urge to reinvent themselves for reinvention’s sake. Evocative melodies, dense textures, swelling crescendos, and crushing heaviness remain central to Caspian’s sound, but on CASPIAN, the band finds new possibilities within those familiar contours, letting patience, repetition, and instinct carry as much weight as surprise.

Ten years on, Spotlights return with the album that started it all - Tidals is now reissued as a 10th anniversary edition via Ipecac Recordings. Out digitally today (listen here: https://spotlights.lnk.to/tidals) and on vinyl on Oct. 30. Vinyl comes in two variants: Deep Space Splatter and Pale Blue Dot (webstore/band exclusive), both limited to 500 copies each.

Spotlights occupy the space between a push-and-pull of jarring metallic catharsis and sweeping distortion. Even as either side vies for supremacy, neither extreme ever completely tightens its grip, allowing waves of melodic vocals and expressive sonic sorcery to breathe in the middle. This standard was first developed on Tidals.

Aaron Harris (isis, Palms), who first brought the band to Ipecac, says, "When I first heard Tidals I couldn't wait to share it with everyone I knew. And so I did. And I have yet to find anyone who isn't blown away by it immediately."

On revisiting the material, Mario Quintero comments, "It was an interesting experience opening the old sessions for Tidals. Initially, I was going to just remaster it, but digging through the tracks got me excited and I couldn’t help myself. It was fun starting from scratch and approaching the mix in a new way, while still retaining the same vibe as the original. I’m really excited about the updated artwork as well. Our friend Josh Flowers did an amazing job of retaining the old look while making way better. Can’t wait for people to hear it!"

The band will play a special show celebrating the album’s anniversary at Saint Vitus Bar on Nov. 7 with Torche.

Dead Poet Society offer a final preview of their forthcoming album, Monarch (Oct. 2, Spinefarm) with today’s release of “Miami For The Weekend” (https://youtu.be/O0nAfW8q46g).

“Miami For The Weekend” follows the release of “Cold,” “Roach” and “Sinner Systems,” tracks that highlight Monarch’s balance of weight, melody, and emotional intensity. The new music has drawn swift praise, with Revolver calling it “tense and knotted with danceable dread,” Kerrang! describing the songs as “seething,” and Consequence hailing the tracks as a “glorious success.”

Produced by Mutemath frontman Paul Meany (Twenty One Pilots, Pierce The Veil), mixed by GRAMMY Award-winning Adam Hawkins (Turnstile, Yungblud), and recorded at Valley View Studios and The Park in Los Angeles, Monarch finds Dead Poet Society digging deeper into the instincts that have always defined the band.

"We wanted to carve out our own piece of territory," says vocalist and guitarist Jack Underkofler of the band’s approach to writing Monarch. "I just wanted to swing for the fences with this one. All the things I felt made us, I wanted to see how much deeper I could go with them and try to boil down the essence of the feeling that makes Dead Poet Society who we are.”

The result builds on the foundation established by 2021's -!- and 2024's FISSION, delivering the band's most expansive and emotionally resonant collection yet. It's an album that embraces contrast, weight and melody, vulnerability and defiance, and exploits the tension between them.

Lustmord Lombardo, the pairing of two of heavy and experimental music’s most respected musicians, ambient heavyweight Lustmord and percussive force Dave Lombardo, release “The Desolate Shore Part I: Submergence” (https://youtu.be/gsFPRO5Om2w) from the duo’s forthcoming album, The Pulse of Atoms (Oct. 2, Ipecac Recordings).

“’The Desolate Shore’ is a meditative landscape that feels like a slow descent into the abyss,” Lombardo says of the newly released track. “There is a sense of the ground moving beneath you as shifting rhythms make it feel like nothing is ever completely still beneath the surface.”

The pair previously released “Paleomagnetic Resonance,” an eight-minute meditative composition that Consequence described as “a brooding atmospheric drone track.”

Lustmord, discussing the duo’s approach to the album, shared: “One thing about an album like this is that you can't really point it out as being part of any specific genre or hopefully any specific period. Is it from last year? Is it from 10 years ago, is it from 20 years ago, is it from 5 years in the future? It's trying to create something that has its own sound, not tapping into whatever musical language or history you're familiar with. It goes way, way further back. This is the sound of planets dying or of stars being born. It's about a bigger picture. It’s the sound of the birth of the universe and the death of the universe; it’s not rock and roll.”

The two musicians met backstage at a Fantômas show, introduced by mutual friend Buzz Osborne, around the time that Lustmord and Melvins released their collaborative album. Nearly two decades later, Lombardo and Lustmord convened as Lustmord Lombardo, crafting an album that is as cold and distant as it is frantic and engaging. The Pulse of Atoms showcases an unheard side of Lombardo and brings Lustmord back to his industrial roots.

Rather than composing songs in a traditional sense, Lustmord built evolving walls and vortices of sound, leaving room for Lombardo to add percussion and various synthesizer layers. Once the editing and arrangement was complete, Lustmord mixed and mastered the record, which was a balancing act between the two players’ large, loud musical presences.

Our Common Collapse, who last month announced their signing to 3DOT Recordings, have released a second standalone single, “Ritual” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=50mgd65uFOk) via the label.

Guitarist and producer Elliot Merriman says of the track, which arrives in tandem with a video: “It’s about a parasitic relationship with vices and escapism and how it secludes you, making you feel stuck and isolated but comfortable at the same time—a repeating cycle or ritual.”

Late last month, the band released “Invertebrate,” a punishing track that led Drew Fortune to say: “Good F Goodness! This is heavy by their standards; this is actually so heavy.” MetalBirb’s reaction? “That’s some filth.”

In a hint of what’s to come, Merriman added: “We’ve spent a long time writing and refining this new material and we can’t wait for everyone to hear a more evolved, fully realized version of the band. Every decision from the songwriting to the production was made with the intention of pushing our sound further while staying true to the music we enjoy listening to and creating. This is only the beginning of what we’ve been working on.”

Originally formed as "a high school project for a bunch of friends" in 2017, Our Common Collapse have steadily refined their progressive deathcore sound, drawing inspiration from everything from 2001: A Space Odyssey and The Lord of the Rings to Meshuggah and Deafheaven. Following the release of their 2019 EP No Longer Human or Known, the band continued to gain fans and momentum with singles including "The Lonesome Tongues," "Languish," "The Romantics," and "Weeping."

The Schizophonics, who recently signed with Alternative Tentacles, have released “Black Pleather” (https://youtu.be/8r4dkQmQCL0), the first single from their forthcoming album, Burning Floor, which will arrive later this year via the legendary label.

“’Black Pleather’ is twist music from hell,” the San Diego-based trio exclaim. “With its driving clap-a-long beat and dark-yet-campy imagery, it’s the unholy love child between Chubby Checker and The Stooges. Rock’n’roll is dance music!”

The accompanying video, which was filmed at Golden Ghost in San Diego, brings all the groovy ghoulies on to the dance floor, and features a cameo from the Melvins’ Dale Crover. The clip also previews the band’s upcoming North American Fall tour, which kicks off on Sept. 17 and features openers Fever Dog (Sept. 17-27), Descartes a Kant (Sept. 30-Oct. 22), and Crover (Oct. 6-8, and 11-16). Nick Raskulinecz, the GRAMMY-Award winning producer of iconic albums by Foo Fighters, Deftones, Korn, and more, has launched Hiss Recordings, a singles-focused label that highlights Raskulinecz’s latest discoveries and brings their music to a wider audience, one pair of songs at a time.

The first new artist to emerge from Hiss Recordings is Doom Mutual, a Nashville-based duo featuring Daphne Browdy and David Gestiehr. Released as a two-song digital single (“Static Planet”/”Crowbar”), the “Static Planet” video debuted this morning via Revolver in tandem with an interview with Raskulinecz.

Speaking with Revolver, Raskulinecz discusses his plans for the label and the reason he picked Doom Mutual: “They have a really cool sound that needs to be heard. I think people will really dig what they are about. Super creative and they have a great sound that’s different from what’s happening now.”

On the track, Doom Mutual said: “’Static Planet’ captures the feeling of watching your life happen through a layer of interference. It’s about searching for connection in a world that feels distant and artificial. We wanted the music to feel like a blanket of sound—massive and overwhelming—like trying to find a signal through endless noise.”

Maynard James Keenan has spent the past two decades helping turn the Verde Valley into an unlikely wine and culture destination. In 2024, he and his wife, Jennifer Keenan, expanded Queen B Vinyl Café to include a café and coffee roaster. Today, it’s Northern Arizona’s exclusive Record Store Day location and an artist-friendly venue, with recent and upcoming performances from Khemmis, Author & Punisher, and more.

On Sept. 4, Keenan opens Queen B Sushi at 816 N. Main St. in Old Town Cottonwood. Reservations are available via QueenBSushi.com.

"Although I've been enjoying sushi since my days in Boston, circa 1987, my first Japanese tour wasn't until 2000 with A Perfect Circle," Keenan says. "It was an eye opening and mind-blowing experience. While there, I picked up these amazing titanium and hard wood travel chopsticks from Snow Peak. And I've carried them with me ever since. Last year I ran into Janeane Garofalo at the Chelsea in NYC. She was saying to David Cross and Dave Hill, 'I haven't seen Maynard in several years but one thing I remember is that he used to carry chopsticks in his pocket.' At which point I reached into my pocket and pulled them out. Twenty-five years I've been carrying these chopsticks. That's how much I love sushi."

Queen B Sushi is led by Culinary Director Chef Brett Vibber, whose résumé spans Roka Akor's London, Hong Kong, and U.S. locations. Vibber built the Queen B Sushi team around two hires: Chef Chuhiro "Thomas" Kato, who trained under Nobu Matsuhisa in Beverly Hills and Masaharu Morimoto in New York, and Chef Sheridan "Sher" Chase, an Arizona native who built his career in kitchens from California to Texas before returning home.

The concept began almost by accident. When Keenan and his wife, Jennifer, were developing the menu for Queen B Vinyl Café, they shelved the idea of a full sushi program, assuming they wouldn't find the right chef in a town of 12,000. Vibber, already on staff, turned out to be exactly that chef.

Queen B Sushi will pour a rotating selection of Caduceus Cellars and Merkin Vineyards wines.
