🗞 I've been interviewed by Forbes for yet another reputation crisis.
Yesterday, the internet wanted to cancel the Duke of Cambridge, with caustic criticism over his comment about the crisis in Ukraine, which was taken out of context. Britain’s Prince William drew sharp criticism after he said on Wednesday that it was ‘alien’ to see war in Europe.
Reactions on Twitter about Prince Williams’ comments were quick and critical.
CNN anchor Jake Tapper tweeted succinctly in response to the royal, ‘Read a book about your own family, dude, 'adding a 1937 photo of Edward, the Duke of Windsor, and his wife, Wallis Simpson, shaking hands with Adolf Hi**er in Germany.
Bernice King, the daughter of the Reverend Martin Luther King, Jr., also called the comment ‘horrific'.
👉🏼 But, Prince William was misquoted. 👈🏼
Given the current sensitivities around our global sociocultural narrative around bias, this news story is worthy of our attention.
What could be done differently to avoid this backlash? I draw insights and highlight the importance of media training and advice in preventing reputational damage. No matter what topics public figures or leaders discuss with reporters, media training is an important way to help ensure they say the right things, in the right way and for the right reasons.
Even the most articulate leaders can sound tone-deaf if their statements are taken out of context. A media advisor acts as their barometer and ensures their storytelling is current, expansive, and relatable to broad media audiences.
