Years ago, a very wealthy man was asked about the condition of his soul. He responded as he always had - with the idea that money can buy anything. A large sum of money was offered if anyone could give him tangible proof that he even had a soul. His business acumen was not in keeping with the spiritual, so he did not know his soul was a combination of mind, will, and emotions - the very things he used to accumulate his wealth! Many real things are not tangible - fragrance, the wind, sounds; but we feel their influence and know them to be actual and sometimes more enjoyable than they which is touchable. To hear the wind chimes, to smell the bed of petunias and honeysuckle, to feel the breezes - these lovely things prove that we do have souls. ~ My friends, your people have both intellect and heart; you use these to consider in what way you can do the best to live. ~

“The Owl and the Flame of Knowing”
An inspired retelling from Hopi & Apache wisdom

Long ago, when the world was still young,
Humans lived without fire — cold in the dark, afraid of what they could not see.
Each night, the shadows crept in, and the people prayed,
“Who will bring us the light?”

The wolf said, “I will hunt for it.”
The eagle said, “I will fly to the sun.”
But only the owl, quiet and unseen, watched in silence.

One night, the owl flew higher than any bird,
To the mountaintop where the gods guarded the Flame of Knowing.
They said: Whoever nears the fire will be burned — for truth is not gentle.
But the owl did not fear.

It did not want fire for warmth.
It wanted fire to see — to see what others could not.

The owl perched before the sacred flame.
It did not cry out or demand.
It only watched
 and listened.
And the flame, fierce and proud, grew still.
It left behind a spark in the owl’s eyes —
A gift of sight beyond the veil.

Since then, the owl has seen through shadow.
It became the keeper of forgotten knowledge,
The one who walks through darkness without losing its way.

The elders called it:

They say the eagle and the salmon are ancient companions, bound by a sacred bond created by the Great Spirit. The eagle, with its powerful wings and sharp vision, was entrusted with the task of protecting and observing from above, maintaining the balance between the sky and the earth. The salmon, with its long journey through the rivers, carried the wisdom of the earth.

One day, the eagle saw the salmon struggling in the waters, and without hesitation, it swooped down to help. As the eagle lifted the salmon with its strong wings, it reminded the people that every creature plays an essential role in the harmony of the world.

The lesson of the eagle and the salmon is clear: all living beings are interconnected. We must help each other, for the strength of one depends on the strength of another.

Moral: True strength lies in unity and cooperation, where every being has a role to play in the circle of life.

Ancient Song: The Birth of the Bear
Hear me, brothers and sisters, gather near,
A tale of the bear, mighty and revered,
Born from the earth, from the heart of the wild,
With the spirit of strength, gentle yet wild.
Long ago, when the first winds blew,
And the mountains stood tall, the sky so blue,
The earth trembled, the stars did shine,
And the bear was born, a creature divine.
Hear me, brothers and sisters, gather near,
A tale of the bear, mighty and revered,
Born from the earth, from the heart of the wild,
With the spirit of strength, gentle yet wild.

Before the world had a name, the Great Spirit created the salmon to bring life to the waters. The salmon, born in the deep rivers, carried the wisdom of the earth and sky in its heart. It swam through the currents, teaching the people the cycles of life—how to be born, how to grow, and how to return home. The salmon’s journey from river to ocean and back again symbolizes resilience, renewal, and the importance of returning to one's roots. Its lesson: Life is a continuous cycle of growth, change, and return.

"Wolf Who Sang the Moon"
In the days when the Moon still hid behind the clouds, afraid to shine, the nights were cold and lonely. The stars blinked with doubt, and the forests held their breath.
But Wolf was not afraid of the dark.
Each night, he climbed the highest ridge, raised his head to the sky, and howled.
Not in anger.
Not in sorrow.
But in longing.
“Come back,” he called, “We remember you.”
The Moon, curious, peeked through the clouds. She heard Wolf’s song—wild yet gentle, full of memory, full of love. It stirred something ancient within her.
And so, slowly, she began to rise.
Each night, Wolf sang. And each night, Moon grew bolder—until finally, she glowed full and bright, watching over the land once more.
The people rejoiced. Light returned. But they never forgot who had brought it back.
Even now, when the Moon is high and silver, the people say:
“Listen. The Wolf is still singing. He sings not for himself, but for all of us who need the light.”

“The Shell That Remembers”
They say the Turtle carries more than her shell.
She carries stories — old ones, long forgotten by the wind but remembered by the Earth.
When a child is born, the Turtle passes by silently, leaving a mark in the soil.
When an elder passes, she circles the waters near the village, as if gathering their last breath into the deep.
The elders say:
“If you see a Turtle cross your path, do not rush past her — she walks with those who came before you.”
Turtle teaches us to remember.
To listen to the quiet ones.
To honor the past not by speaking of it loudly, but by carrying it gently.
She does not live fast, but she lives fully.
And when she rests, the world slows down with her —
just long enough for you to hear what you forgot to feel.

They say that in the beginning, the spirit of the wolf and the eagle came together, one bringing strength and the other, wisdom. The two spirits merged within a single being, creating a powerful force for those who would listen. The person in the image, adorned with the spirit masks of both the wolf and the eagle, represents the balance between strength and knowledge, courage and vision.

The wolf, known for its loyalty and fierce determination, symbolizes the raw power of the earth. The eagle, with its sharp eyes and ability to soar above the world, represents the wisdom gained from seeing things from a higher perspective. Together, they guide the person to walk the earth with both grounded strength and elevated vision.

The lesson of this image is clear: true power comes from balancing strength with wisdom, from acting with courage while also listening to the higher wisdom that guides us.

Moral: Strength without wisdom can lead to destruction, and wisdom without strength can be ineffective. True power comes from the harmony of both.
