Last day of Tourism Week in Canada, and I’ve loved seeing all the posts from my network. I’d be a bit homesick but I just got back, so I’m coping!
One of my earliest roles was working on contract for the Quebec Ministry of Tourism - Bonjour Québec - proofreading official publications in both English and French. It was a great gig!
At the time, it felt like travelling by proxy, discovering places I didn’t even know existed in our own backyard, from vast landscapes to hidden corners of Montreal. I’m pretty sure it influenced just how much I’ve travelled since.
I wasn’t writing the copy back then, but I read everything, over and over and over. And it stayed with me; I still follow what those publications eventually became on social, and it’s incredible just how much harder destinations have to work now just to be seen.
The way places are marketed has evolved so much. Platforms, formats, audience behaviour. Everything’s shifted. Destinations are competing in a world saturated with the most beautiful imagery, content, and algorithm-driven inspiration. It’s fun, and a bit exhausting.
Places have to light a fire in people and earn a place on their bucket lists. Bucket lists... imagine.
Evocative, relatable, and aspirational. It has to make people imagine themselves there, or they simply won’t book…
