The Trials and Tribulations of Affiliate Marketing: The Importance of True and Open Communication
Affiliate marketing has been the go-to source of income for aspiring bloggers, but it isn’t as easy as one might think. Though many people see affiliate marketing as a quick way to earn money online, most fail to make any real money from their efforts. Why? Because affiliate marketing takes a lot of time and requires even more dedication in order to turn a profit. But what can bloggers do to remedy this? If there are such things as secrets or shortcuts to affiliate success, shouldn’t more people be able to find them?
Making the business relationship
Affiliate marketing can be a profitable way to make money, but it is not without its own set of challenges. Many companies have strict rules about which websites may advertise their products and what kind of content should be presented. This can lead to difficult conversations between the affiliate marketer and their publisher. However, open communication is important for both parties in order to maintain a mutually beneficial relationship. If you find yourself in an uncomfortable situation where you need to bring up sensitive topics with your client, take advantage of these tips on how to approach them respectfully:
- Be concise. - Keep your tone professional and courteous. - Know what you want beforehand so that you don't waste time floundering for words. Make sure that your request is well-thought out before broaching the subject, as this will help keep your message clear. Explain why you are making this request and how it will benefit them (and you!). Avoid being combative or overly aggressive; this type of language will only create distance between the two of you. Maintaining respect at all times will go a long way towards establishing goodwill and strengthening business relationships.
Helping each other out
There are few things more frustrating than being promised one thing, only to have the goalposts shifted on you.
It's crucial that affiliates are up front with each other about what they're looking for in a partner, so that expectations can be managed from the outset.
But just as important is being honest about what your business does or doesn't do well. When an affiliate's needs don't line up with those of their affiliate partners, there will inevitably be unhappiness all around. Transparency means not hiding any aspects of your business that could potentially impact how it works with others. Of course this isn't always easy - but it sure beats scrambling to work out how to make an unhappy customer happy at 3am! If you've ever had to deal with someone who seems genuinely disappointed, ask yourself if there was anything specific you might have done differently to avoid this problem. For example, did I say something that implied my product was better than everyone else's? Did I push someone towards a particular service instead of respecting their choice? Did I insist they sign up when they didn't want to?
We should never underestimate the value of listening - or overestimate our own importance.
Honesty is the Best Policy
Honesty is the best policy. It's a phrase that has been used for centuries as some form of an old proverb. But what does it really mean? Honesty means telling the truth, being straightforward, not misleading someone about something, and to not lie. These are all things we should strive for in life in general. However, when it comes to business relationships with other companies, honesty can be even more important. When you're entering into a relationship with another company, you want to make sure you have open communication lines so there are no surprises. You also want to ensure that they're honest with you because if they're not then how will you know how much trust is there between your two companies? That said, I think one of the most important aspects of successful affiliate marketing campaigns is true and open communication between affiliates and merchants. Sure, there may be some bumps in the road from time to time but at least you'll have known what's going on behind the scenes. Sometimes this communication may go smoothly and sometimes not. Regardless, both sides should still strive for honest conversations where there are no secrets or lies.
Treat Others How You Would Want to be Treated
One of the most important aspects of any type of relationship is communication. Whether you are in a romantic relationship, you are an affiliate marketer working with a merchant, or you're just getting to know somebody, open and honest communication is key. One major problem that I have seen over my years in this industry is the sheer lack of honesty when it comes to communicating. Sometimes merchants get upset if they don't make as much money as they would like. Sometimes affiliates don't tell the truth about their success rates because they feel embarrassed by not meeting expectations. Regardless of how either party feels, both sides need to be aware of the other's successes and failures so that there can be improvement on both ends. Honesty may hurt at times but lying will never benefit anybody involved. It is important for us all to remember one thing: treat others how you would want to be treated.
It Takes Time
One common misconception is that affiliate marketing is a get rich quick scheme. This couldn't be further from the truth. Building an affiliate marketing business takes time, energy, hard work, and dedication. I am a living testimony to that fact. It has been over two years since I started my blog in pursuit of affiliate marketing success. Sure, I've had some great success; but, at the same time, there have been plenty of disappointments too. What does this tell us? That if you want success in any endeavor, you need to be committed for the long haul. There are no overnight successes in anything. You're going to hit bumps along the way. What matters most is how you respond when things don't go your way or when someone steps on your toes - which they inevitably will do! Let's take for example a situation where someone copied one of my articles and published it as their own. Now, technically speaking, this person was violating copyright law and he was doing something completely immoral by not attributing me as the original author. However, what would happen if I got angry with him? He'd just keep doing it because he knew that he could upset me while I didn't really have any recourse other than to just let him get away with it.
Don’t burn bridges
As an affiliate marketer, it can be hard to remain true to your word. You’re told by the company you’re working with that if you sell a certain number of units, they’ll pay you what they owe you, but that doesn’t always happen. Sometimes it may take months before they actually get back to you about your balance and that can really put a strain on the relationship between the company and affiliate. But as long as there is communication open and honest between both parties, things should go smoothly. It is important to understand that companies are busy and they sometimes have trouble keeping up with all their obligations, so patience is key! Be patient and understanding of how much work it takes for them to get back to you in a timely manner. And if this continues, there is no harm in looking elsewhere for affiliate opportunities--you want to make sure that any business or product you promote offers something different than what you're promoting now.
Conclusion
It's important to be open and honest with your affiliates. You never know what someone might tell you, or what they're experiencing that might help you make your service better. It's not just about making money; it's about building a community. You can't do that without knowing where people are coming from and how they're feeling on the inside.
