New Music Friday with some cool and international updates.
French cosmic pop-rock duo Billet Doux return with “Maybe Tokyo,” a cinematic, 80s-tinged anthem about breaking free and finding rebirth in the unknown. Kaycie Chase and Pierre Elgrishi have built something that feels both intimate and explosive, and with their debut album Superbloom Is Here Again arriving June 19 via Tôt ou T**d, this is just the beginning.
On a different topic, G-Son Studios — the Atwater Village space where the Beastie Boys made Check Your Head, Ill Communication, and Hello Nasty — is being brought back to life.
What looked like an unassuming ballroom from the outside was, on the inside, part recording studio, part skate spot, part basketball court, part creative clubhouse. Beck, Biz Markie, Run-DMC, and Redd Kross all passed through. Diplo, Mad Decent Records, and X-Large Clothing called it home after that.
Then it sat. It fell apart. Demolition crews showed up.
That’s when Adam Englander and Alex Cherin stepped in and started restoring the space from the ground up. Original artwork uncovered. Infrastructure repaired. The vision: reopen G-Son as a live music venue, gallery, rehearsal space, and community arts hub for the next generation of LA creators.
The Kickstarter is live now.
