Memory believes before knowing remembers." ~ William Faulkner

In a 96-year-old writer recounted in fine detail the Day of Enfamy: a priest at St. Martin of Tours church delivered the words "We are in war" to the parishioners which included this then twenty-something teacher with her first grade class, squirming in the pews. The children had no idea the implication, but this young woman felt the dead weight of the situation.
It was bleak.
She recalled "breathtaking statements" delivered in the vacuum of the beautiful cathedral. She recounted exactly how many casualties, how many ships destroyed or damaged, the time of the attack on Pearl Harbor...how within hours the U.S. went to war with Japan, and then, in turn, how Germany and Italy went to war with the U.S. "It was a bleak time," she wrote.
Days changed from happy to dark. All steel was gathered up and reprocessed for war equipment. Houses grew dim and curtained at night. Curfews. Rations. "There was much," she said, "I can't recall." But in the same breath, everyone waited for the precious news to be delivered in the newspapers.
When asked how she was able to recount all the exact numbers, figures, specifics of the battle. She looked over, smiling, "Well I looked it up on the computer." 😉

We have incredible gifts of and much we have to learn from our friends. They are the stoic, brave ones, really.

My my my. ❤️
