Chopping is right around the corner, and nitrate is one to keep an eye on this year. The dry stretches and variability in Wisconsin have some fields carrying more nitrate than usual. 🌽​

Nitrate tends to sit in the lower stalk, and a rain after a stressed stretch can actually increase these levels for a few days. If your corn recently had a good rain, give it at least three days before you chop. ​
​
Another thing to keep in mind this season: high nitrate corn can also mean silo gas during fermentation, so be extra cautious around the pile those first couple weeks.​
​
Every field is a little different. If you’re not sure what you’re working with, a nitrate test is cheap insurance. Give your Northside agronomist or nutritionist a call and we’ll walk through it with you.​

Northside Elevator, Inc. started in 1948 with Steve Brussow and a feed mill on Main Street in Loyal.

Three generations later, his son Tom passed the reins to Tim and Ted, and now the fourth generation, Jordan and Cameron, is part of the day-to-day. The services have expanded, the footprint has grown across three Wisconsin locations and the industry looks nothing like it used to.

Meet Rick! 👋

Rick joined Northside Elevator in 2008, and he’s still a key part of the team today, running routes as an hourly driver and lending a hand in agronomy and grain operations.

Rick grew up on a dairy farm and started driving trucks as soon as he was old enough. Ask him about the old long-haul route to Fremont, Nebraska, and he can still walk you through every mile.

Family is at the center of Rick’s life: his wife of 43 years and their nine grandchildren keep him busy. You can tell he can't let go of the long-haul life because he and his wife often travel across the country to visit their kids in the military. Camping is in the mix, too.

Soybean harvest is closer than it feels. Some of what you find scouting these next few weeks is worth acting on now. Other things are worth writing down for next year.

Japanese beetles? Still time to make a call this season. White mold showing up? Not much to do now, but it’ll shape variety and trait picks, as well as other preventative measures going forward.
