: please stop hitching chiropractic to this dumpster wagon.
I love chiropractic. I have spent much of my adult life in and around this profession, and that is exactly why this bothers me.
Dr. Sigafoose said, âBe for chiropractic and against nothing.â
Being a chiropractor does not require being anti-vax.
It does not require believing Dr. Fauci - a decorated virologist who saves tens of millions from HIV and you didnât even know his name until Covid- âmurdered millions.â It does not require turning RFK Jr. into a medical authority. And it certainly does not require adopting the current president as one. He is a convicted felon, and a civil jury found him liable for sexual abuse. He is not a physician, immunologist, epidemiologist or vaccine scientist.
No where close!
Neither is RFK Jr. Political affiliation is not a scientific credential.
If you want to criticize Dr. Fauci, criticize him. Scientists and government officials are not above scrutiny. Investigate mistakes. Investigate conflicts. Investigate whether officials were truthful. But there is an enormous difference between legitimate criticism and publicly declaring that a physician âmurdered millionsâ without evidence establishing murder.
What does any of that have to do with chiropractic?
DCs have spent more than a century fighting to be recognized as legitimate healthcare professionals. Why would you voluntarily drag yourselves back toward the stereotype of chiropractic as quackery by making your offices political headquarters and presenting conspiracy theories as healthcare?
And chiropractors need to think very carefully about scope of practice.
Most state acts define chiropractic scope around diagnostic and treatment services and procedures taught by accredited chiropractic colleges and approved by the Chiropractic Board.
There is a big difference between answering a patient's question, discussing general health and telling a parent that vaccines are dangerous or that their child should not receive one.
Once your professional advice influences a healthcare decision, there can be consequences. If a patient relies on advice given by a healthcare professional, refuses appropriate medical care, and that patient or their child is seriously injured or dies, don't assume a Facebook disclaimer or the letters âDCâ after your name make the consequences disappear. Also, those anti-vax posts and memes on your page⊠not smart. Complaints to licensing boards and civil litigation are very real possibilities. Whether liability actually exists would depend on the facts, state law, scope of practice, duty and causation.
This isn't about whether you voted Republican or Democrat. It isn't even about whether you personally vaccinate.
It is about protecting chiropractic.
Patients come into our offices with every political belief imaginable. They should be able to trust that their chiropractor is going to be their chiropractor, not their infectious disease specialist, epidemiologist, political commentator or conspiracy theorist.
Chiropractic is an incredible profession. Talk about chiropractic. Teach chiropractic. Practice chiropractic. Defend chiropractic with evidence and excellent patient care.
Be for chiropractic and against nothing.
Stop giving the people who already want to call you quacks ammunition.
