Voters are asking ChatGPT, Gemini, and Grok about candidates. Most campaigns have no idea what those answers say about them. And even fewer know how to influence them.

Jack Welty came on the pod to talk about preparing for the first AI election. He shared practical steps any campaign can take right now to ensure voters are finding credible, accurate information when they go looking.

Republican consultants are using AI daily at nearly twice the rate of Democrats.

“Every day that we are not adopting this stuff, the other side is moving faster. And I think ultimately that’s going to translate into votes.”

Jack Welty helped build the analytics program for two Democratic presidential campaigns. He joined me on Hello Merge Tag to talk about where our party is falling behind and what our side needs to start doing differently — now.

"It doesn't matter if Democratic senators or members of Congress put out TikTok videos or bring influencers for special hearings. Ultimately, if it's not in their bones that they want to fight with everything they have, the people will see right through it."

Murshed Zaheed has been in this fight for 30 years — Howard Dean's digital team, Harry Reid's war room, CREDO Mobile. He has watched the Democratic Party cycle through the same conversations about tactics over and over again. From "blogging it" in 2006 to TikToking it in 2026.

He's tired of it. Not because tactics don't matter. But because tactics without strategy are just noise.

Most campaigns use the Meta Ads Library the same way (if they use it at all!). They scroll around, take some notes, maybe screenshot a few ads.

Joshua Canter took a different approach.

He built a tool that automatically pulls ad data, researches the real-world context around it, and generates a full research report — complete with charts, timelines, and sourced analysis.

In our latest episode of Hello Merge Tag, we got into how he built it, where it breaks down, and why he thinks AI is about to be a serious equalizer for smaller campaigns.

Also: the Wesley Hunt $6 million ad budget story is a genuinely epic AI cautionary tale.

Two campaign platforms we probably aren’t talking about enough: Nextdoor and… serialized content.

I just dropped a really fun ep of Hello Merge Tag with Ryan Davis, Founder and CEO of People First one of the largest social impact influencer agencies in the US, and the author of The Month in Digital, and he completely changed how I’m thinking about both.

First: Nextdoor.

Because it’s entirely location-based, it can be a powerful place for hyperlocal issue conversations — especially for down-ballot races or local advocacy campaigns trying to reach people in a specific community.

Second: serialized content that isn’t about the candidate.

Instead of forcing busy candidates into content schedules, campaigns should experiment with docu-style or issue-based series that follow staff, organizers, or community members.

Platforms love serialization. And it creates a way to consistently tell stories about the campaign’s values and work — without needing the candidate in every piece of content.

Lots more in the episode about influencer strategy, micro-creators, and why “going viral” shouldn’t actually be the goal.

Lucy Ritzmann is a progressive digital strategist and a founding member of COURIER's national newsroom. She’s a former co‑author of FWIW, their must-read weekly email for us political digital nerds. I first met her collaborating on The FYP — a weekly Courier email covering political TikTok, specifically focused on how the two presidential campaigns were approaching one of the most important and complex platforms in politics.

Lucy's currently in law school at Georgetown, but when she’s not buried in casebooks, she’s writing a great Substack newsletter called The Group Chat Correspondent.

I invited her on the pod to talk about the current state of independent progressive media, what trends she’s following at the moment and a whole lot more.

We covered SO MUCH ground.

Sadly something happened with my mic and my audio’s not great. Fortunately, Lucy sounds amazing 🙂

“One media company is now carrying ICE’s public image almost entirely on its shoulders..."

After analyzing 12 billion views across 90,019 videos posted in December and January, Drew Eldredge-Martin of Ground Truth AI found that Fox News accounts for 70% of ALL views on YouTube tied to positive narratives about ICE — without Fox, the pro‑ICE narrative would nearly collapse.

In this episode of Hello Merge Tag, Drew breaks down what his narrative analysis reveals about who’s shaping the conversation, what content is actually driving attention, and what it means for campaigns in 2026.

Does digital campaigning actually matter in elections? According to a new study from the Center for Campaign Innovation, the answer is yes — and the consequences are real.

In this episode of Hello Merge Tag, Eric Wilson breaks down findings from a comprehensive analysis of the 2025 Virginia House of Delegates elections, where Democrats and Republicans ran vastly different digital programs — with very different results.

We talk about what the data shows, where each party is falling behind, which digital tactics actually move voters, and what tools campaigns still need to invest in, if they want to compete.

If you work in politics, campaigns, or digital strategy, this is a must-catch conversation.

Miles Bruner publicly quit the Republican Party — and called on his colleagues to do the same.

He’s not the first to walk away (cc: Timothy Miller). But I was particularly interested in talking with Miles because he worked in digital, inside a party he found himself agreeing with less and less.

He joined me on the pod to talk about:
-What’s actually working for the right
-What he thinks is coming next
-The secret behind all those Bible verse posts Republicans share
-Whether Google is really suppressing GOP emails (spoiler: it’s not!)
-Escaping the GOP cult
-And a whole lot more
