In a quiet moment last week, I began thinking about how dependent we’ve all become on our mobile phones.

Really, take a moment yourself and consider how it impacts your online marketing.

Today, more than half of all Google searches happen on mobile devices.

If your website takes more than three seconds to load on a phone, research suggests the majority of those visitors will leave before the page finishes loading.

They don't see your services.

They don't see your reviews.

They don't see your phone number. They just leave.

This is a silent lead killer that you never know is happening unless you look for it.

But the damage doesn't stop at user experience. Slow mobile load times affect three things simultaneously:

Conversion rate—customers leave before they see anything worth calling about. SEO rankings—Google uses mobile page speed as a direct ranking factor.
AI citations—a poorly optimized site sends weaker signals to AI tools evaluating your credibility.

A fast, mobile-optimized website isn't a premium feature. It's a foundational requirement for any local business that wants to turn digital visibility into actual customers.

If you don't know your current mobile load speed, it's worth checking. Most business owners are surprised—and not in a good way. This is one of the things we measure when we do our Digital Health Snapshot reports.

Most local businesses treat their Google Business Profile like a digital phone book listing.

That’s a mistake.

Your customers are actually making decisions about your business before they ever reach your website.

Right inside Google.

Here’s what most businesses often never seem to complete:
➡️ service descriptions
➡️ business updates
➡️ FAQs
➡️ appointment links
➡️ photos
➡️ products
➡️. insurance information
➡️. weekly posts
➡️ review responses

Meanwhile, Google — and now AI search tools — are actively analyzing those signals.

An inactive GBP sends a message:

“This business may not be engaged, current, or trustworthy.”

An optimized GBP sends the opposite message.

And here’s the bigger shift most businesses still have not realized:

AI search tools increasingly pull business information directly from Google’s ecosystem.

So if your profile is incomplete, outdated, or neglected…

AI may recommend someone else instead.

The businesses winning local visibility right now are not always the biggest businesses.

They are often the businesses sending the clearest trust signals.

And your Google Business Profile is one of the strongest trust signals you control.

The reality is that a business can have:
• more website visitors
• more social media reach
• more impressions
• higher Google rankings
…and still quietly lose revenue.

Why? Because traffic is not the goal.

Action is the goal.

A local business owner does not deposit “website visits” into the bank.

They deposit:
• phone calls
• appointments
• booked consultations
• new patients
• paying customers
And those are not the same thing.

Here’s where businesses get trapped:

They celebrate vanity metrics while ignoring conversion problems happening right in front of them.

More visitors mean nothing if:
• your website feels untrustworthy.
• your reviews look outdated.
• your Google profile sends mixed signals.
• your calls-to-action are weak.
• your site loads slowly on mobile.
• customers still leave uncertain.

That’s how businesses end up with “good marketing numbers” and still have disappointing revenue.

The question is NOT:
“How many people visited?”

The question IS:
“Did the right people take action?”

The businesses growing fastest right now are not necessarily getting the most attention.

They are converting trust faster.

And that difference changes everything.

Perplexity. If you haven't heard of it yet, file this away—because you will.

Perplexity is an AI-powered search engine that answers questions in full, conversational prose. No list of links. No ads. Just a synthesized answer, with sources cited at the end.

Perplexity is growing fast—processing hundreds of millions of queries per month as of mid-2025—and its user base skews heavily toward educated, high-income professionals. For most local service businesses, that's an ideal demographic.

When someone asks Perplexity 'Who's the best estate attorney in Bergen County?' or 'What's the highest-rated physical therapist in Ridgewood?' - it synthesizes information from directories, review platforms, and credible websites and delivers a recommendation. Not a list. An actual answer.

The businesses that show up in that answer are the ones with clean, consistent data across the web. Strong directory presence. Third-party mentions on credible sites. Well-structured website content.

Most local businesses have never even heard of Perplexity. That's exactly why the businesses paying attention now will have an advantage their competitors won't see coming.

Think about the last time you searched for a local service. Did you just call the first name that popped up? Probably not. You did a quick 'vibe check' first.

Before a new customer picks up the phone, they spend about 30 seconds deciding if they trust you.
Here is the lightning-fast checklist that runs through their mind, consciously or not:

⚫ The Stars: Are you a credible four-plus stars with dozens of recent comments, or do you have five stars from three reviews from four years ago?
⚫ The Recency: Are the reviews from this month, or did the last customer visit before the pandemic?
⚫ The Vibe: Is your social media active, human, and professional, or is it a digital ghost town with a blurry logo?
⚫ The Tech: Does your website load instantly, or do they have time to make coffee while waiting?
⚫ The Look: Are the photos real, current, and of your actual business, or are you hiding behind grainy exterior shots and plastic stock photos?

If just one of those signals feels off, the window of opportunity slams shut. The customer doesn't call. They simply move to the next result. And you never even knew they were there.

The businesses winning the most new customers from local search aren't always the 'most qualified.' They are just the ones who respect that 30-second first impression window.

Is your business telling customers, 'Call Us' or 'Keep Looking'?

If I asked you what "schema markup" is and your mind went completely blank, relax. You are in excellent company. Most small business owners have never heard of it.

But right now, it is likely the single biggest thing missing from your website.

Let’s break it down:

Think of schema markup as a hidden cheat sheet built directly into your website’s code. It doesn't change how your site looks to human visitors, but it acts like a spotlight for AI tools and search engines.

Instead of forcing Google or ChatGPT to guess what you do, schema explicitly tells them:

📍 "This is a chiropractic practice."

📍 "We are located right here in Ridgewood, NJ."

📍 "Our doors are open Monday through Friday."

📍 "Here is the exact list of insurance plans we accept."

Without this cheat sheet, AI tools have to play detective. They piece your information together from random, dusty corners of the web, which often leads to outdated, incomplete, or flat-out wrong answers.

When you add proper schema, you hand AI the exact facts it needs. You make it incredibly easy for these systems to understand your business—and recommend you to local customers with total confidence.

Your customers will never see this code, but AI engines hear it loud and clear. Because most local businesses completely neglect this, getting it done is your fast track to standing out.

Is your website actually talking to AI, or is it just sitting there?

🚨 Your response to a bad review matters more than the review itself. 🚨

Most business owners check their online reviews like a school report card. They read the grade, feel a certain way about it, and just move on.

That is a massive missed opportunity.

Reviews aren't a one-way street—they’re a public conversation. When you reply, the whole world is watching how you run your business.

When you reply to a good review with real, specific thanks (not a lazy "Thanks for the business!"), you prove to future customers that actual, attentive humans are running the show.

When you reply to a bad review calmly and professionally, something incredible happens. People who see you fix a mistake actually trust you more than a business with perfect five-star reviews. They see how you handle adversity.

Here is the kicker: AI tools like Google’s "Ask Maps" are reading your profile right now. They don't just look at the review; they analyze the whole exchange.
Your replies directly shape the summary AI gives to potential customers.

Stop ignoring your reviews. Every ignored comment is a missed signal. Every great response is an asset that builds trust on autopilot.
