Despite tons of marketers and business consultants saying to know and focus on "your numbers"... ⁠

🚩 Most business owners actually focus on the WRONG numbers⁠

I had a client come to me and say they needed more inquiries. They were already getting around 300 inquiries a month, yet their revenue was down by 30% YOY. Suspicious, I looked at their inquiry rate, which was UP exponentially. Something else was wrong...⁠

βœ… Do this instead: Look at the number closest to your bank account. For my client, I started with the sale and worked my way back to their marketing. Their close rate was strong (closest to the bank account), their inquiry-to-consult rate was terrible (next step out), and their marketing-to-inquiry (third step out) rate was great. By starting with the money and working back, it was easy to see that we needed to focus on turning inquiries into consults in the sales pipeline (instead of focusing on inquiries). ⁠

Bottomline, at a certain point in your business, trusting yourself and embracing what makes your business unique is important...even with the numbers.⁠

Like many of you, I've been dealing with a softening wedding market and working hard with clients to come up with reasonably sustainable and scalable solutions to keep a steady flow of clients coming through their digital doors.

I mean, it's scary to see metrics dip and trend lines going south. It takes discipline and a clear-eyed look at the most important metrics to make the best business decisions during an economic downturn.

But that's easier said than done, am I right?!

To help you avoid common analytics pitfalls when you already have enough stress on your plate, here is the BIGGEST "red flag" I'm seeing when it comes to using data and analytics to manage an economic downturn.

🚩 You're relying on your marketer or salesperson for your analytics insights.

Marketers and salespeople often only look at the numbers that point to their success. Your social media contractor might point to all the reach their posts get you. A salesperson might point to all the traffic or inquiries they are sending. These may sound good at the moment, but you can actually still be losing money, even when marketing seems to be going well.

βœ… Do this instead: Ask yourself (or your contractor or salesperson) how their efforts ladder up to sales. If they can't answer, that's OK; it just means it's your responsibility to see if that reach or those inquiries are actually leading to consults and contracts.
