When a client tells me their bookings are low, my first response is to ask more questions (I mean, just say no to random marketing suggestions).

"Bookings are low" could mean four completely different things.

1. Not enough people are finding you.
2. People finding you but not reaching out.
3. People reaching out but not booking.
4. Or everything looks fine and bookings still aren't following.

Same symptom. Four different problems. Four different fixes.

Running ads when your follow-up is the issue won't move bookings. Redesigning your site when not enough people are finding you won't either.

Which one do you think you have? Tell me in the comments, or take the free Marketing Gap quiz to find out.

Is there anything you *don't* use AI for?

I'm seeing a lot of speakers with AI-generated presentations. Nothing wrong with that, it's clear they know their stuff and are experts in their field. No shame.

I just don't do that.

Not going to lie, I tried. I just found the results were flat.

I realized the je ne sais quoi that comes from my experiences--the fact that I read widely (not just business books) and thinking deeply (not just business problems)--enlivens my talks.

You might see "little-brother" cameos, snapshots of life in the mountains, and real client experiences from 10 years in business.

These are details AI never produces well.

Could I "train" AI to get close? Sure. But I believe live-event audiences deserve a higher level of authenticity and care. And I'm here for it!

In 2019, I was invited to speak on the main "Cottonwood" stage at Wedding MBA.

I was nervous.

On my way from the hotel to the convention center, I ran into Alan Berg Certified Speaking Professional who had some excellent advice:

He said a good speaker will have a collection of stories to pull from. Extra stories allow a speaker to be flexible on stage, selecting the right stories in the moment to meet audience members where they're at, with experiences they can relate to.

I had been trying to "add value" with more information. Alan showed me that folks didn't need more information, they needed key insights and a clear path forward.

Every time I write and design new talk, I remember Alan's advice, and the audience feedback overwhelmingly positive every time I teach on stage.

Now, seven years later, I am both honored and thrilled to be following Alan on Main Stage (Monday, July 21) at -Event-Summit

Alan will be the opening speaker at 8:50 and I'll follow at 9:50.

Hustling for more traffic when it's your website or sales process that's problem, doesn't fix the problem. It scales it.

A website that doesn't work is bad for almost everyone who lands on it. People who heard about you from a friend, people who found you on Google, people you paid to bring there. Same wall, every time.

The better move?

Stop losing the visitors you already have before you spend anything on getting more.

Do you know how many people visit your site vs. how many actually reach out?

That number tells you a lot.

She spent $13,500 improving her Instagram, but her bookings didn't move.

Not because she got bad advice, but because Instagram wasn't her problem.

She's a venue owner. Eight years in business. Good reputation. About forty weddings a year.

She went to a conference, sat in on an Instagram session, and came home inspired. She hired a brilliant social media manager. $1,500 a month for nine months.

Her content got better. Her follower count went up.

Her bookings moved some, but not in the way she wanted or expected.

When we looked at her actual data: Instagram wasn't a traffic source for her business. She was getting visitors from Google and vendor referrals. Her inquiry rate was solid. But She got ghosted after the consult.

What she had was a follow-up problem.

Spoiler: This is not a marketing problem!

Leads were coming in. Inquiries were turning to consults. But after she met potential clients, she felt it was important to continue the conversation personally.

No automation.

So her response times varied, sometimes by days.

Some post-consult leads got a proposal by the time they got home and others waited a day or twe.

Some got three or four follow-up touches. Some got one.

Instagram couldn't fix any of that.

The advice she got about Instagram wasn't wrong. It was great advice for someone with a visibility problem.Someone who needed people to know about her venue.

She didn't have a visibility problem. She just never looked at her data first.
