Being a social media manager can be incredibly stressful. There is constant pressure to grow accounts and help to achieve business goals while navigating an ever-changing landscape that seems to have new rules daily.
How can we keep up? How can we make sure we always win?
The truth is, we can’t. We can only do our best.
In honor of Mental Health Awareness Month, here are 3 things I’ve learned that have improved my mental health in this field:
1. Be ok with being a beginner.. even if you’ve been at this for a while. This is not a career that has a set-it-and-forget-it process. The education never stops. I subscribe to newsletters and frequently read blog posts I trust to ensure I’m up-to-date with the latest trends and updates.
2. Pick your battles. Sometimes, the updates and changes to the platforms are worth pivoting your content strategy and development, and sometimes, they aren’t. Do your research with an open mind, but remember that everyone’s audience is different, and it isn’t always the right move. If you have to put your foot down with a client because you don’t believe it’s the right move for their content, don’t be afraid to express those feelings. Remember, they’ve hired you for a reason!
3. Your content reflects your mental state. Content creation is creative, after all. When my mindset is in check, the creative juices can flow. If I’m tired and burnt out, my content will reflect that. It may come across as stale, boring, or unoriginal. Set clear work hours and boundaries with your clients and schedule time to prioritize your mental health daily!
