Broadcast Seeding: Seed to Soil Contact

Proper seed-to-soil contact is crucial for successful germination and plant growth. The size of seeds directly impacts their ability to establish contact with the soil, influencing germination and growth outcomes. Larger seeds require adequate soil coverage for nutrient uptake, while smaller seeds, though easily dispersed, may struggle to pe*****te the soil. Enhancing seed incorporation techniques post-broadcast seeding is key. Utilizing methods like rolling or pressing the seeded area can significantly improve seed to soil contact, leading to enhanced germination rates.

Flower of the week. California Honeysuckle, Lonicera hispidula, is a California native perennial shrub-vine, found mostly in the Coast Range, but in the lower Northern Sierra foothills as well. Very attractive to hummingbirds, it will climb on a trellis or sprawl on the ground. Check with California native plant nurseries for plants.
