How 3D printing and 3D scanning combine in the important work of preserving, documenting and interpreting the historical artifacts of our shared history.

So much of this work is at risk right now.

Excited to see some of our work tonight when the “Creole Origins” exhibit opens. When asked us to conserve some of the artifacts and help with a few of the mounts this just made sense. We scanned a similar cauldron from Fort St. Jean Baptiste had print it for us and then carved away the areas and attached the artifacts with magnets. So much fun!

Just a quick reminder that keeping your resin system clean is an ongoing maintenance activity.

Don’t leave that build platform sitting around if there’s any resin on it! It’s super easy to keep your build plates cleaned and ready to go. We scrape and do a quick wash in a tray of isopropyl, making sure to get into all the nooks and crannies with a stiff brush. Then we dry and a quick final pass with lint free wipes dipped in clean isopropyl.

Buildup, stuck on bits, sticky residue, material intrusion into cavities and fasteners can all cause print failures, FEP / membrane punctures, gummed up gears, and damaged glass.

Also remember to routinely run your fingers over the edges and the platform surface to catch burrs or sharp gauges before they do damage. A flat glass panel from a hardware store and fine sandpaper can help you keep the platform flat and smooth.

Wrapped up a small job as part of a larger late 1950s boat restoration project. Original metal light enclosure was salvageable and the customer had it chromed. The plastic parts though, had faded, crumbled, and deteriorated. We used a combination of 3D scanning, manual measurements, and 3D printing to replicate the top fin detail and both red and green lenses. A UV protective coat finished it up. Hope to see it on the water soon!
