I'm in Frankfurt now. The Buchmesse starts in the morning. This is ~18th time to attend this event, but first since pandemic. I've stayed in this same hotel, I think, 4 times. Got into my super cute, perfectly functional, German chic room and...the TV didn't work. Kept cutting out. I thought I wanted to catch up on the news. It's been a few weeks.
Nathaniel, the young guy at reception came up, tried to fix it, called Mustafa, the tech guy. While we waited, we talked about Turkey! He speaks it fluently, so I used my 10 words and made him laugh. He told me to say "Salaam Mustafa" when the tech guy arrives.
I did. He was shocked. I told him my 10 words of Turkish and...he's Turkish! And he speaks it. Some expensive chocolate I bought in Istanbul for someone at home got gooey in my luggage, so I'd washed it off and he read the label. Together, we pilfered a TV from a neighboring room and installed it in mine. We laughed a lot.
He then took "my" broken TV to the other room and installed it there. He'd left his jacket in my room, so I took it over with one of the chocolate bars. He said, "You said that's for your family!" and I said, "I want you to have it. Please!" And...he gently grabbed me by the ears and kissed me on the forehead!
I got to extend the beautiful, gentle, gracious, lovely personality of the Turkish people a few more hours! It is such a magical country. Just so magical. Go if you ever get the chance.
OK, off to book selling now...
