During my time in Tennessee, I would often get asked where I was from. My accent made it obvious that I was not a born and raised in the south. Whenever the topic came up, I felt the need to explain where I came from. Over time, my explanation became a well rehearsed short story (a story which, by necessity, included the common two handed michigan gesture to indicate location).
At one point or another, during the conversation, the remote and scantly populated nature of the Upper Peninsula would come up and whenever it did, I would crack a tongue-in-cheek joke: “It’s a good place to be from!”, insinuating that I was better off anywhere else. I truly felt that I was better off anywhere else for a long while.
I only visited home one time over the span of 17 years until I moved back to Marquette in 2019. During my time here, I have only felt at home here a handful of times. Don’t get me wrong, Marquette is a beautiful place but in a lot of ways it is vastly different than the rest of the UP.
I’ve seen some promotional material that tries and ultimately fails to make the point that the only reason to put up with the bugs and snow and cold that are common to the UP is Marquette. I can’t help but disagree.
Sometimes I feel like this town thinks its s**t doesn’t stink like some of the less populated, less affluent areas of the UP but in truth it stinks just the same.
Here is a little love for my home town Newberry, Michigan. It’s a good place to be from.
