Recently, I saw someone share that they were asked to lead the social media and graphic design team at their church—without any formal experience in either.

It immediately took me back—and reminded me of how up for the challenge I was.

I remember when I was strongly encouraged to work with the PR ministry. I don’t even recall whether my background in marketing was part of the decision, but I do know the assignment wasn’t random.

Did I feel equipped? Absolutely.
Was it new territory? Yes.
And even then, I wanted to be great at it.

That assignment turned into over a decade of serving in ministry communications—often as a solo auxiliary, sometimes with a small team—learning how to steward the message, build systems, and connect people beyond the four walls.

This series is a reflection on what I learned, what I’d do differently, and how I’d approach ministry communications today.

One thing about photographing events is- you have to be forward thinking. You must think about how your content is going to be presented online (and print) and shoot with that in mind. Capture the artist’s perspective and the crowd’s perspective. The output should almost make people feel like they were there too.
