"Portland… find your way."

This is not a song knocking Portland. It's a rock love letter I wrote to a city I love — Burnside in the rain, streetlight halos in the puddle light, Hawthorne humming, Pioneer Square where the crowds once sang. It's about a city in its healing process, and the guitars you can still hear playing through the scars.

A nostalgic Pacific Northwest rock anthem for everyone who remembers what Stumptown was — and believes in what it can be again.

"AI is killing real music" is the oldest argument in art — and it has lost every single time.

The paint tube made Impressionism possible. Photography was called the death of painting. Dylan got booed for an electric guitar. The Musicians' Union voted against synthesizers. Auto-Tune was declared the end of real singing. Every new tool in music history was called a cheat — until it became an instrument.

But there's a real line, and it never moved: influence is free. Taking someone's exact lyrics, melody, recording, or royalties is theft. Music history proves both — from the Amen break to "My Sweet Lord" to the artists who died broke while their work made millions.

In 1906, John Philip Sousa — the most famous musician in America — published an essay warning that recorded music would destroy music itself. In 1965, a folk audience booed Bob Dylan for playing an electric guitar.

In 1982, the British Musicians' Union tried to restrict synthesizers.
Sound familiar? The AI music debate is the same argument our grandparents had — and history has ruled on it every single time.

But this isn't a puff piece. The article also digs into the part that WAS theft: Big Mama Thornton's $500 check while Elvis's "Hound Dog" sold ten million, Arthur Crudup dying broke after writing Elvis's first single, Led Zeppelin's four settled credit lawsuits, and the drummer behind the most sampled six seconds in music history who died homeless.

Where's the real line between influence and stealing? The courts drew it decades ago — and it applies to AI exactly the way it applied to George Harrison and Biz Markie.

LOSING ONE — Track 5 on the album PACIFIC INTERFACE — is a tribute to my dad and the childhood he built. Tustin, California under the Santa Ana winds. An old Dodge truck with no A/C, windows down in the desert heat. Camping under Oregon pines. Lake effect snow near Erie. Baseball cards on the kitchen floor.

A nostalgic Americana folk song about a father and son, the roads we traveled, and the voice that still guides me.
