Washington ranked 50th in the nation for returns to farm operators in 2024, with nearly -$295 million. WSU financial advisor Jon Paul Driver says the driving force is a strong U.S. dollar.

Washington has five active volcanoes: Mount Baker, Glacier Peak, Mount Rainier, Mount St. Helens, and Mount Adams. These stratovolcanoes are part of the Cascade Range and formed by tectonic plate movement along the Pacific Northwest. Scientists closely monitor them because future eruptions are possible. So yes, the mountains are beautiful, but they’re also very much alive!

Fun winter fact! Ice still writes its story across Washington’s peaks. The state holds more glaciers than any other in the Lower 48, and Mount Rainier carries about 25 of them on its shoulders...slow, ancient, and enduring. ❄️

As we head into the holiday week, gratitude feels like the right place to land. Gratitude for Washington’s landscapes and waters, for the people who live and work here, and for the shared commitment to this place we call home. Politics may shift, but the connection to this land—and to one another—endures. Opportunity is what brought my ancestors here, and it’s why we continue to choose to stay.
