Business Lessons From The Godfather? Forgetaboutit!
I recently watched “The Godfather Epic” on HBO. We all remember some of the most iconic lines from these movies such as, “I’ll make him an offer he can’t refuse” and “Keep your friends close and your enemies closer.” Well, while watching this epic recently, I discovered some valuable business lessons from these movies that I wanted to share with you. No, I will not suggest you run your business like a gangster. I will suggest you take these four traits from the movie and test them on the way you conduct business.
1. The Importance of favors. Vito Corleone learned early on that doing favors for others was more valuable than taking their money. However, so many times in business we feel burdened when someone asks us to do them a favor, whether a client or friend. Doing favors and being first to extend a courtesy generates good will. It also makes you someone people enjoy being with.
2. The power of body language. You’ve heard the adage, “fake it till you make it”, but what does that mean? Do you remember the scene in the Godfather when Michael Corleone arrives at the hospital after his father had been shot and finds the hospital empty without any staff or bodyguards? As he is pushing his father’s bed to a hiding place, in walks “Enzo the Baker.” Michael tells Enzo they are coming back to finish his father off. Without any weapons he and Enzo stand on the steps of the hospital with their coats buttoned looking like bodyguards. When the shooters arrive, Michael and Enzo make a motion to unbutton their coats as if to reach for a gun and the shooters drive way. That’s the power of body language. If you want to portray confidence, look confident.
3. Find new products. After the Corleones becomes the most powerful crime family in New York, Tom, the Consigliore tells Michael, “Narcotics are the future.” Do you know where the future is in your industry? If you don’t, your competitors will.
4. The importance of dominating a territory and/or market. Michael Corleone has the vision to see that legalized gambling in Las Vegas and Cuba opens new markets and he is not only the first to enter those territories, he dominates them.
What are some of your favorite lessons from movies? I’d love to hear them.
