What is a Wetland?

An area of land that is saturated with water.

A wetland can take many shapes and forms, and include marshes, ponds, lakes, rivers, floodplains, and swamps, as well as those that are found along the coast including marshes, estuaries, mangroves, lagoons, and even constructed wetlands, including rice paddies (a staple in the diet of half the world’s population), salt pans and fishponds. These land areas are flooded with water either permanently or seasonally.
